Will Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work on a travel eSIM in China?
Depends on the plan's exit routing: travel eSIMs sold abroad usually work; hotel Wi-Fi and local SIMs don't.
What it depends on
If Travel eSIM from Airalo, Nomad, Holafly or Trip.com→then Their help pages say Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Maps work on cellular data; do not add a VPN on top.
If Saily, CMLink, 3HK, Ubigi or another provider→then Ask for a written answer about the specific China plan before buying; reports vary.
If Hotel, café or airport Wi-Fi→then Filtered like a local connection — switch back to eSIM data for blocked apps.
If Mainland local SIM or mainland-carrier eSIM→then Filtered; you would need a VPN installed before arrival.
If You need ChatGPT→then Not supported from the mainland, Hong Kong or Macau per OpenAI; may refuse and carries account risk.
Why it usually works: a travel eSIM sold from outside the mainland is a roaming product, and many providers send your traffic out through a gateway in Hong Kong, Singapore or their home network, where the mainland filtering does not apply. Routing is the provider's choice and can change; “roaming” alone is no guarantee. It is not a VPN and does not encrypt like one — Nomad's help centre says so explicitly and advises against running a VPN on top.
Who says it for their own plans: Airalo's help centre (“a VPN is NOT required” on its China, Regional Asia and Global packages), Nomad's help centre (Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, Gmail, YouTube listed), Holafly (which calls it an “integrated VPN” — the mechanism is roaming, not a VPN) and Trip.com's editorial guide. Each vendor speaks only for its own plans, and they are sellers. For Saily, CMLink, 3HK, Ubigi and others, get a written answer about the specific China plan before buying — CMLink reports go both ways.
Where it stops working: most hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi is a mainland connection and the usual blocks apply, even with the eSIM still installed — switch back to eSIM data for blocked apps. Same for any mainland local SIM.
ChatGPT is a separate problem. OpenAI does not list mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau as supported regions and says accessing from unsupported regions can lead to account suspension — so even where the connection works, don't rely on it, and be aware of the account risk. That is OpenAI's policy, not the mainland filtering.
Reliability varies. Firsthand reports from 2025–2026: Airalo across six weeks without a VPN; Holafly across Yunnan; Nomad flaky for some testers. Speeds drop on smaller carriers' networks, and support answers change — check the provider's help page in the week before you fly.
Hotspot and tethering rules are per plan: Holafly's unlimited China plan caps tethering at 1 GB a day (product page, read September 2026); check the terms of the plan you buy rather than assuming.
