Where will Alipay / WeChat Pay on a foreign card not work?

The core case: scanning a business's merchant QR, or showing your payment code at a till, is what foreign-card binding was built for, and it works at most places. Not every merchant code is guaranteed — the merchant's category and acquirer setup, the wallet's risk checks and your own issuer can each decline. Scan the QR that carries the logo of the app you are paying with.

Where it stops, per WeChat Pay's own help page: international cards “do not support certain features such as red packets and money transfers”. From traveller experience (not a first-party list), that also covers the personal collection QRs (个人收款码) that small stalls and drivers sometimes hold up, wallet balance top-up and withdrawal, and savings or insurance products; Alipay's international-card terms are reported to be similar. If a vendor shows a personal code, ask for the merchant code, or pay cash.

Mini-programs and transit are the grey zone. Traveller guides report that some third-party mini-programs (ticketing, deliveries) and city transit QR codes reject foreign cards, varying by city; one 2026 travel blog says the Alipay and WeChat transit codes worked for it in every major city it tried. Beijing is the one city with an official statement that metro gates take foreign contactless Visa and Mastercard; for other cities, including Shanghai, treat blog reports as unconfirmed. There is no official city-by-city list — try it, and keep a fallback.

The other failure is upstream: your issuer declining a cross-border online transaction. Same fix as binding — tell the bank you are travelling, and carry a second card from a different bank.

New fallback since December 2025: China UnionPay's “Nihao China” app links overseas UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard cards and, per UnionPay's own pages, pays across UnionPay, WeChat Pay and Alipay acceptance, inside 200+ platforms including 12306, Ctrip and Meituan (300+ was the launch figure), on metro in 43 cities and buses in about 1,760 county-level areas. These are UnionPay's claims and were not independently tested for this entry.

Physical cards: at merchants that have a POS terminal, UnionPay is accepted as a rule; Visa and Mastercard only where the logo is shown — hotels, malls, larger shops, station ticket offices. Not every merchant has a terminal at all.
