Chengdu Museum
The city's own history museum on the west side of Tianfu Square: free, five floors from the Bronze Age to the 20th century, and the country's largest collection of shadow puppets and marionettes. It is the single best first stop for understanding Chengdu — and the single most bookable big museum in town for a foreigner: 20,000 free slots a day, Friday and Saturday evenings until 20:30, and, unusually, an English booking interface that takes an email address instead of a Chinese phone number (museum notice, August 2025). Book 14 days out; the slots go.
Real-name booking up to 14 days ahead, only via the museum's WeChat official account or official website — no third-party sellers. Overseas visitors: the booking system's English interface accepts an email address (museum notice, 1 Aug 2025). 60+ swipe in with ID; servicemembers and visitors with disabilities collect a QR code at the ticket-enquiry windowVerified · 2025-08Source ↗
Real-name; passports can book (English booking path exists). Real-name; bring the passport you booked with. The museum's English booking path is stated but which document types it accepts is not spelled out
The museum names 10:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00 as its peak hours; Friday and Saturday evenings (to 20:30) are the calm, foreigner-friendly slots — a panda morning, the museum after dark. In summer 2025 it added 2,000 same-day tickets at 16:00 daily; check whether that returns.
English website with the full visitor guide; the museum runs scheduled free guided tours (Chinese) and official volunteer guides; unofficial paid guiding inside is banned. Information desk on floor 1; smart audio guides available. Enquiries 028-68277011.
