Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum
The garden-shrine to China's most loved poet: Du Fu fled the An Lushan rebellion and lived on this creek bank from 759 to 765, in a thatched hut a friend helped him build, and wrote some 240 poems here — the ones about the spring rain, the hut's roof torn off by the autumn wind, the wish for 'ten thousand rooms to shelter the poor scholars of the world'. What stands is a Ming-and-Qing memorial garden of halls, bamboo, red-walled paths and a reconstructed hut on 300 mu, run as a national first-grade museum. ¥50 (¥25 for students and children), real-name tickets 14 days ahead on the museum's WeChat official account with a ticket window for anyone without a Chinese ID card, free Chinese / English audio on its WeChat official account, paid English audio from ¥18 and human guides in foreign languages.
Real-name, up to 14 days ahead, on the 'Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum' (杜甫草堂博物馆) WeChat service account; enter by swiping a Chinese ID card, or exchange the booking for a paper ticket at the ticket window if you have no ID card; window sales also exist (annual passes and paper tickets are issued there). Real-name entry; passport holders use the staffed window. One person, one document. The official pages name a passport only for free-entry children; passport holders use the ticket window to collect a paper ticket rather than the ID-card turnstile
Coach groups arrive from 10:00; the garden is at its quietest at opening (9:00) and after 16:00, and best of all in light rain — the poems are about rain. Holiday weeks run extended hours (8:30-18:30) and sell out more slowly than Wuhou Shrine, but book anyway.
The museum's own menu: free Chinese / English audio on its WeChat official account ('参观指南 – 游览攻略'); QR-code audio at every sight in English, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Russian, Portuguese and Arabic (¥18); handset audio guides ¥25 at the guide desks at all four gates; human guides in foreign languages ¥60 per person, about an hour; Chinese guides ¥120 per group of 1-3 or ¥40 per person for 4-20. Bilingual visitor rules are posted on the site.
