Three parallel lanes (Wide, Narrow and Well) on the ground plan of the Qing garrison town (the 'Lesser City' laid out in 1718 for the Manchu banners), rebuilt from 2003 and reopened in June 2008 as the city's showcase old-town street: grey brick, courtyard doorways, teahouses, snack counters, and 183,000 visitors on a single Spring Festival day in 2026 (city government figures). Free and open at all hours, it is the most-visited spot in Chengdu and one of the least original — almost everything you see is 2008. Walk it for the atmosphere, read the brick history wall in Well Alley for the substance, and step one street west into Xiaotong Lane for the version locals use.

Beat the crowds
On a weekday before 10:00 the lanes are empty and photographable; from noon to about 21:00 every day, and all day at weekends and holidays, it is a slow shuffle. Holiday crowd control (one-way flows, entrance queues) is routine — one day of the 2026 Spring Festival holiday saw 183,000 people.
