The oldest and largest Taoist temple in the city — named Qingyang Palace by imperial decree in 881, rebuilt under the Kangxi emperor in 1667-71 — and one of the few working Taoist monasteries in China a visitor can simply walk into for ¥10: six halls on one axis, the octagonal Eight-Trigrams Pavilion with Laozi on his ox, the bronze rams in the Sanqing Hall whose horns are rubbed for luck, resident Taoists in black, and free eco-incense at the gate (bring none of your own). Metro Line 5 stops outside. The temple publishes nothing online itself; hours and the ¥10 are the platforms' figures, and the Lunar 2/15 temple fair is the one day it is packed.
EntranceMetro Line 5 Qingyang Palace station, Exit D; the Culture Park and Shufeng Yayun are next door to the east

Beat the crowds
The 15th day of the second lunar month — the traditional temple fair and flower fair — and Spring Festival (the temple has stayed open through New Year's Eve night) are the crowded days; any weekday morning is quiet and the Taoists are at their morning rites.
Language
Mostly Chinese; hall signage is bilingual in places. Office 028-87766584.
