Southwest Minzu University Ethnic Museum
The university museum at the east edge of the Tibetan quarter: four halls of the material culture of south-west China's minority peoples (a Tibetan religious-art hall, a Tibetan mask hall, a Gesar-epic hall and a south-west minorities hall), with over 10,000 objects from thirty-odd peoples of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Tibet and beyond. It is the museum version of the street outside, and the one place in the district that explains that Sichuan is Tibetan, Yi, Qiang and Hui as well as Han. Free, but open to the public only two afternoons a week (Tuesday and Thursday 14:00-17:00, register with ID at the door), closed weekends, holidays and vacations.
No booking for the public at the fixed slots — register with a valid ID at the door (museum page, updated 25 September 2024); the online system ('民族博物馆参观预约' on the university's one-stop portal) is for campus groups, at least three working days ahead; other times are by appointment. Foreign visitors must first be approved by the university's general office and its International Cooperation & Exchange office. Phone 028-85522057Verified · 2026-09Source ↗
Real-name entry; passport holders use the staffed window. Valid ID registered at the door for the Tuesday / Thursday public slots. Foreign visitors ('外宾') must apply in advance to both the university's general office and its International Cooperation & Exchange office and may visit only once approved (visitor requirements page) — showing a passport at the door is not enough
Two afternoons a week, with a free guided tour at 15:00 on both days; come at 14:00 for the tour and an empty hall.
Not known; the collection halls are Tibetan-focused and the university teaches in Tibetan and Yi as well as Chinese, so bilingual labelling in minority scripts is likely — English is not.
