A grid of six-storey 1980s-90s housing blocks south of the First Ring Road (Yulin Road, Yulin West Road and a dozen numbered lanes) that became the picture of 'ordinary Chengdu': plane trees, mahjong under the arcades, hotpot and skewer (chuanchuan) joints on most corners, and the original Little Bar at 55 Yulin West Road, opened in 1997 by Tang Lei as the hang-out of the city's painters and the cradle of its rock scene. The folk singer Zhao Lei put it in his 2016 hit 'Chengdu' ('walk to the end of Yulin Road, sit at the door of the Little Bar'). Free streets, nothing to buy a ticket for; the bar opens 15:00-2:00 and is a small quiet room now — the gigs moved out years ago.

Beat the crowds
Dinner from 18:30 fills the hotpot places and the Little Bar's few tables by 20:00 — go at 16:00 for the bar and the mahjong hour, eat at 17:30 or after 21:00. Weekend afternoons bring the song's pilgrims for photos at the door.
