'The first Chan monastery west of the Sichuan basin': a Tang-dynasty foundation (named Zhaojue in 877) rebuilt in the Qing, on 128 mu next to the zoo, and one of the national key Buddhist monasteries listed in 1983. It is a working monastery with monks, incense and a vegetarian canteen, not a museum — and it shares a gate with the zoo, so it pairs with the panda house in an afternoon. Entry is free or a token ¥2, depending on the listing; the temple publishes no website, so hours here are the platforms' word.
EntranceLine 3 Zhaojuesi South Road station Exit A, about 1 km on foot; buses 1, 25, 33, 49, 53, 71, 87 to the Zhaojuesi stop; or through the zoo's south gate

Beat the crowds
The first and fifteenth of each lunar month and the big Buddhist festivals fill the halls with worshippers; ordinary weekday mornings are quiet.
