Guangzhou's oldest street, and it can prove it: two glass floors in the middle of the pedestrian mall show eleven road surfaces stacked from the Tang dynasty to the Republic, and the foundations of the Song-to-Qing Gongbei gate tower, dug up in 2002 when the street was repaved. The axis has not moved in 2,200 years — the Nanyue palace ruins are one block north. Around the glass it is a chain-store shopping street with arcaded side lanes, open all hours, free; come for the ground and the lanes, not the shops.

Beat the crowds

Weekend evenings are the crush from about 18:00 to closing; weekday mornings before 11:00 the glass floors are empty and the light is best for photographing the layers.

Language

District signage on the street is bilingual (about 420 sign panels were replaced in 2016); the road-site interpretation panels are in Chinese with English headings.
