A 46-hectare hillside park on the west side of Fei'e Ridge, built by the city in 1996 for Guangzhou's 2,210th birthday and laid out as an outdoor history lesson in bronze and stone: a 'Guangzhou history' sculpture zone (the Five Rams legend, the Nanyue kingdom, the foreign traders), a 'Chinese history' zone, a big lawn and a forest walk. The centrepiece is the Huaxia Column, and the bureau's own line is that the park is 'a green history book' of the city. Free, open 6:00-22:00, with Metro Line 11's Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine station (exit C) at the gate.

Beat the crowds
Morning exercisers before 8:00 and families on weekend afternoons; the sculpture zones are never crowded.
Language
Sculpture plaques are Chinese; the historical scenes (Five Rams, Nanyue king, the Thirteen Hongs traders) are recognisable without them.
