A red-sandstone hill on the Shizi Ocean (the Pearl River's outer estuary), quarried for Guangzhou's temples, halls and city walls for two thousand years, which left it a 'man-made Danxia' of cliffs and caves (a national protected monument since 2001). On top, the 1612 Lianhua Pagoda that every ship entering the river once steered by, and since the 1990s a 40.88 m gilt-bronze Guanyin facing the sea. ¥54, 7:00-17:00, at the far eastern edge of Panyu: an hour from the centre by metro plus bus, or by boat from Tianzi Wharf.
EntranceMetro Line 3 Shiqiao or Line 4 Shiqi station, then the 'Shiqiao-Lianhuashan' bus; or boat from Tianzi Wharf to Lianhuashan pier (fishing port)

Gate ticket office ¥54 (¥43 on May Day, National Day and Spring Festival — the city price list's holiday price, which the site words as '20% off' for full-price single tickets); or the WeChat ticketing menu
Beat the crowds
Spring Festival (a peach-blossom fair and temple-going crowds at the Guanyin, with extended hours some years), the June-August lotus festival and public-holiday 20%-off days are the busy times; a weekday in autumn has the quarry cliffs to yourself.
