The southern tip of the Shekou peninsula, where the Pearl River meets the sea, and the two things the sea put there. The temple to Tianhou - Mazu, the sea goddess - backs onto Xiaonanshan with the Lingding estuary in front of it; the city runs it as the Tianhou Museum, a branch of Nanshan Museum, on 28,000 sqm with five exhibition halls and free admission, Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-16:00. It was rebuilt on Ming imperial order and was the largest and most influential Tianhou temple on the south China coast under the Ming and Qing.
Read the full note Before you go The short hours are the thing to plan around: this closes at 16:00 with last entry at 15:00, and it is the far southern tip of the peninsula, so it cannot be an afternoon add-on to anything - give it a morning of its own, or pair it with Dananshan and come down the hill. Mondays it is shut, except on major public holidays and traditional festival days, and on the 1st, 15th and 16th of the lunar month, when it opens instead and the 1st and 15th start an hour earlier. Do not come for the cisha ceremony without checking: it is performed around the 23rd of the third lunar month, the goddess's birthday, on a date the temple chooses, which means a different Gregorian date every year - the city culture bureau's own page prints the second lunar month instead, which does not match the usual date for the festival, so take the temple's announcement over any page, ours included. And the fort above is an open hillside relic with no published hours of its own. Something wrong here? Tell us → Not this Tianhou Museum, Chiwan Tianhou Temple and the Chiwan Tianhou Ancient Temple are three names for the same place. A branch of Nanshan Museum, not the main Nanshan Museum on Nanshan Avenue. The Left Fort is on a separate hill about a kilometre south, not inside the temple grounds.
