The company museum of the firm that built Shekou, and by some distance the best single room in Shenzhen for understanding why this end of the city exists. China Merchants was founded in 1872 as the first modern Chinese-owned industrial and commercial enterprise of the self-strengthening era; in 1979 its Hong Kong arm broke ground on the Shekou Industrial Zone, the first piece of the reform era. Since 26 December 2022 it has been in a new building on top of Weibo Hill above the ferry port, where the permanent exhibition, A Century of Striving, a Merchant's Dream, walks through more than 150 years of the company in chronological order, with period objects, documents and scale models. No booking, and closed Sundays.
