Guan Shanyue Art Museum
A national art museum named for the Lingnan School painter Guan Shanyue, who gave Shenzhen 813 of his own works and a full record of his life and teaching; the city built this to hold them, breaking ground in January 1995 and opening on 25 June 1997, days before the Hong Kong handover. It stands between Lianhua Hill to the north and the civic plaza to the south, and it is free, closed on Mondays, 9:00-17:00 with last entry at 16:30. Eight galleries over three floors: the two on the second floor are the permanent Guan Shanyue display, climate-controlled, and the rest carry a busy programme of Chinese painting, design and contemporary shows.
