Shenzhen's sea door: fast ferries to Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong Island, Macau and Zhuhai, run by the China Merchants group whose predecessor built Shekou in 1979. Two reasons it matters more than its size suggests. It is one of only two ports in Shenzhen where 240-hour visa-free transit applies - the other is Bao'an airport - so for a traveller on a through ticket to a third country this is a legitimate way into China without a visa.

Before you goRead the Hong Kong airport route for what it is: a transit corridor, not a way into Hong Kong. The operator states it is 'only for passengers transiting through Hong Kong airport to a third country or region' and 'not for passengers who need to enter the Hong Kong urban area or the non-restricted areas of the airport' - you stay airside the whole way. Timings are unforgiving: check-in and baggage close 45 or 30 minutes before departure depending on which of the operator's pages you read (follow your booking page on the day), boarding 15 minutes before, and the operator wants you at the second-floor desk 60 minutes ahead, with a minimum connection time of 80 or 110 minutes depending on your airline. Do not confuse this terminal with the Shekou cargo port area, which runs round the clock and takes no passengers. And routes and sailing times change constantly - the operator publishes suspension and resumption notices route by route, so check the day you travel rather than trusting any schedule you read in advance, including ours.
