Shenzhen's first theme park and, by the city government's own account, the first in China: a walk-through map of the country in 82 miniatures - the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, the Mogao Grottoes, Huangguoshu Waterfall - opened in September 1989 and joined a year later by a village park of compounds standing for China's ethnic groups. The two were merged into one park on New Year's Day 2003, which is why one gate now sells you both. The craft is the part that survives: the Great Wall here was not poured in concrete and painted with lines but fired as 1:15 scale bricks - more than 6.5 million of them - and laid one by one.

Before you goBudget the time realistically: two parks share one gate here, the miniature park and the village park, and doing both properly is most of a day in Shenzhen heat with very little shade. The scheduled things - the stage shows, the mounted-combat show, the song-and-dance performances at the village compounds - run to a timetable the park posts on its own website each day, in Chinese, and the park says the notice at the gate has the final word, so check the site the evening before and again at the gate. Tickets are 220 yuan for the day and 100 yuan for the night on the park's own site, but they are sold under real names and the gate checks the buyer's physical ID card; the park does not say whether a foreign passport works for its WeChat mini-program or at the window, so budget time at the gate to ask. And know what the format is before you buy: scale models plus scheduled stage performances. If what you want is the actual Potala Palace or an actual village, this is not a substitute, and the free creative quarter at OCT-LOFT, one stop east at Qiaocheng East, is a completely different kind of afternoon.
