Can I link my foreign card to Alipay and WeChat Pay?

Yes

Yes — both list Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover, Diners; the issuer can still refuse. Amex: WeChat yes, Alipay partial.

What it depends on

If Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Discover or Dinersthen Both apps list them. Bind one to each if you have two cards; the issuer can still decline.

If American Expressthen WeChat Pay lists it. Alipay takes only “eligible” Amex cards — check in the app and test before you travel.

If UnionPay card issued outside the mainlandthen Both apps. Any fee waiver is a promotion — go by what the app shows.

If The bind is declinedthen Call your bank to unblock China / cross-border online, then retry with a second card.

Set it up before you fly. Both apps accept a foreign mobile number as long as it can receive SMS, and both verify identity with your passport. When verification is triggered, and exactly what is asked for, varies by app and by how much you spend — have the passport to hand and expect a verification step at some point.

Which cards: WeChat Pay's international-card help page lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover and overseas-issued UnionPay. For Alipay, the government's payment guide lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club and Discover; Amex announced an Alipay integration in February 2025 for “eligible” Amex cards, and press reporting says Amex-network cards issued by other banks outside the mainland are excluded. If Amex is your main card, bind it to WeChat Pay and test Alipay before departure.

“Supported” means the network is accepted, not that your card will bind. The Ministry of Commerce guide is explicit that binding needs the issuing bank's authorisation and that the issuer may refuse. The basic fields are card number, expiry and security code (simplified in March 2024), but the app or your bank can add a name or billing check, a one-time code or 3-D Secure.

Overseas-issued UnionPay cards have linked to both apps since November 2024. The service-fee waiver announced at launch was a promotion, not a standing promise — go by what the app shows before you pay.

The most common failure is your bank, not the app: fraud rules that block China or cross-border online transactions decline the bind or the first payment. Tell your bank you are travelling before you leave and, if you can, bind two cards from different banks.

Traveller reports (not confirmed by either app) say virtual, prepaid and no-name cards are rejected more often, and that verification fails on name-format mismatches — middle names, hyphens, accents. If you get stuck, use the Help / Support entry inside each app rather than a phone number found online.
