Temple of Heaven, Qianmen and Dashilar in Half a Day
Build a one-way half-day from the Temple of Heaven through Qianmen and Dashilar to Liulichang. The paid sight and old shops close before the pedestrian streets do, so reverse the order and you risk locked doors.
The short answer
Temple of Heaven first: East Gate from Line 5 Tiantan East Gate Exit A, in for the halls at 8:00 → north to Qianmen Street (Line 7 Zhushikou for the south end) → west into Dashilar 150 m south of the archery tower → Yangmeizhu Xiejie → Liulichang, 1 km west, before its shops shut at 17:30.
Buy the combined ticket (¥34, ¥28 from November to March): the ¥15 park ticket does not get you into the Hall of Prayer, the Echo Wall or the Circular Mound. Foreign visitors exchange tickets at the window with a passport; whether the online platform takes one is unconfirmed.
The Temple of Heaven's halls, the Zhengyangmen gate tower and the Railway Museum are all closed (the first two open on public holidays); the park itself, Dashilar and Liulichang are not. Walk the park for the cypresses and the tai chi, then do the streets.
Both are booked in advance on Chinese mini-programs, never at the door: the gate tower (¥20) on the '北京中轴线遗产保护中心' WeChat official account at 17:00 for the next 7 days, passports accepted, and its booking gets you through the square checkpoint; the square alone on its own platform 1-7 days ahead.
Dashilar is for walking into the old-brand shops themselves; Liulichang is for rubbings, woodblock prints, brushes and a seal cut while you wait. Neither street has a ticket, and treat Liulichang's antiques as decoration unless you are an expert.

Temple of Heaven
天坛The first stop and the reason to get up early: the park opens at 6:00, the halls at 8:00, and between 9:30 and 15:00 the Hall of Prayer belongs to the tour buses. Buy the combined ticket - the halls are what you came for. On a Monday you get the park and the exteriors only; in summer 2026 the halls stayed open on Mondays until 31 August, so check that year's July notice before assuming. For everyone, first thing in the morning, not on a Monday.

前门大街 · 大栅栏Walk the main street only for the sightline back to the archery tower - it is a 2008 stage set with mall prices - and spend the time one block west: Dashilar's working old brands, Daguanlou, where Chinese film was first screened in 1905, and Yangmeizhu Xiejie's regenerated lane. Hutong etiquette west of Dashilar: the side lanes are homes. For everyone - the walk from the axis to Liulichang.

正阳门城楼A bonus for the organised: sold only through a Chinese WeChat official account, released at 17:00 for the following week, with no ticket at the door - but it accepts a passport, and the booking also gets you through the square checkpoint. If WeChat will not cooperate, the view of it from the square and the archery tower opposite are free, and the silhouette is the same. For anyone who booked on WeChat and can manage steep, narrow stairs.

中国铁道博物馆正阳门馆A specialist museum in a handsome shell: go for the 1906 building and the quiet, not for trains. It is free but booked through a WeChat official account, which for a foreign visitor without WeChat makes it harder, not easier - check first whether the account takes a passport. Pair it with the archery tower directly across the road. For architecture and railway enthusiasts with WeChat, not on a Monday.
Open the place →Liulichang Culture Street
琉璃厂文化街The last stop, and it has to be before 17:30: a reconstruction and a trade street, worth an hour of looking. The things worth buying are rubbings, woodblock prints, brushes, seals and paper; have a seal cut on the east street - the one souvenir here that is made rather than sourced. For anyone who wants something to take home, early afternoon at the latest.
