Beijing
Beijing is laid out along one north–south axis — Drum and Bell Towers at the top, the Forbidden City in the middle, the Temple of Heaven at the bottom — and that imperial grid is still the frame you walk in. It is bigger, slower and more rule-bound than Shanghai: the big sights need real-name bookings days ahead, and the distances are real, with the Great Wall two to three hours each way. Sort the bookings first, then the days; the hutongs and the duck will take care of the rest.
The Districts
Tiananmen, the Forbidden City & Qianmen
13 placesThe axis of imperial Beijing: Tiananmen Square and its museums, the Forbidden City, the two altar parks flanking the gate, and Qianmen–Dashilar, the old shopping quarter outside the front gate — plus the Capital Museum down the avenue.
Jingshan, Beihai, Houhai & the Drum Tower
11 placesThe north end of the imperial axis: Jingshan's hilltop view over the Forbidden City, Beihai's lake and white dagoba, the Shichahai lakes with their hutong shoreline and residences, and the Drum and Bell Towers.
Nanluoguxiang, the Lama Temple & the Eastern Hutongs
11 placesEast of the axis: the Lama Temple and Confucius Temple–Imperial College pair on Guozijian Street, the hutong grid running south through Nanluoguxiang and the Dongsi alleys, the two hutong museums, and Wangfujing as the southern anchor.
Temple of Heaven, Xiannongtan & Liulichang
10 placesSouth of Qianmen: the Temple of Heaven and its park, the Altar of Agriculture and the Natural History Museum opposite, and the Qing south city to the west — Liulichang, the Huguang Guild Hall, Niujie, Fayuan Temple and Taoranting.
The Summer Palace, Yuanmingyuan & the Western Hills
8 placesBeijing's north-west garden belt: the Summer Palace, the Old Summer Palace ruins, the Fragrant Hills and the Botanical Garden, plus the Big Bell Temple, the Five-Pagoda Temple and the Zoo on the way back — the universities, seen from the gate.
The Great Wall
9 placesBeijing's day-trip wall: four visitable sections compared, how to reach each without a tour, and the Ming Tombs and Juyongguan on the Badaling road.
798, Sanlitun & the Embassy Quarter
10 placesChaoyang's modern quarter: the 798 art zone and UCCA, Sanlitun's mall and nightlife, the embassy streets around Ritan Park, the Silk Street, the Liangma River, Dongyue Temple, the CCTV tower from the flyover, and a football match at Gongti.
The Olympic Park & the Northern Axis

Getting by in Beijing
Tap any line for the details.
Three choices for a first visit: (1) around Shichahai–Drum Tower or Nanluoguxiang–Lama Temple (Lines 2/5/6/8): the part of Beijing that still feels like a lakeside hutong city, the only district where an evening walk is pleasant and most gates still have a ticket window; (2) Qianmen, on the Dashilar side rather than Qianmen Street: walk to the square at dawn for the flag and into the palace, but the rebuilt 2008 pedestrian street charges tourist prices; (3) Sanlitun and the embassy quarter (Line 10): where most foreign visitors stay and eat, with card payments, nightlife and visa errands, at the cost of being far from every dynasty. The Summer Palace and Great Wall days start early wherever you sleep.
