Xi'an is four capitals — Qin, Han, Tang and Ming — folded into one walled city: a 1384 bell tower at the crossroads, a complete Ming wall you can cycle around, a Muslim quarter behind the drum tower where dinner is halal by default, and the Terracotta Army a day trip to the east. Its booking wall is thicker than Beijing's, with each big museum releasing its own tickets and treating passports its own way; but with tickets in hand it is the most walkable ancient capital in China, and inside the wall your feet are enough.

Where to stay

Three choices for a first visit: (1) Bell Tower–Muslim Quarter (Line 2, Zhonglou), where most first-timers stay: up the tower at dusk, an evening and a breakfast in the quarter, at the cost of the city's highest tout density (every hotel lobby sells a 'Terracotta day tour' with shopping stops); (2) South Gate–Beilin (Line 2, Yongningmen): the widest stretch of the wall, most bike rentals and a wall-top open to 22:00, with Shuyuanmen and the Beilin museum inside the gate and the Defu Lane bar strip to the west; (3) Qujiang–Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (Lines 3/4, Dayanta): the Tang showcase and the lit-up Datang Everbright City after dark, but 20 minutes by taxi to the wall, never on foot. The Terracotta Army is 30–40 km east and a full day wherever you sleep.
