The lane that runs the whole way round inside the wall at its foot — cafés, guesthouses and old courtyard doors on the south stretch between the South Gate and Wenchang Gate, quieter housing on the west, and the east stretch leading up to Yongxingfang at Zhongshan Gate. It is the free way to have the wall beside you for an hour without the ¥54 ticket, and the most pleasant walk between the South Gate, the Beilin and the east side. No ticket, always open; a feature by the municipal tourism bureau calls it the place to 'touch the city's cultural texture'.

Beat the crowds
The south stretch is the café strip and fills on weekend evenings; the west stretch is residential and empty. Walk it in the late afternoon when the wall throws shade into the lane.
