Terracotta Army: How to Get There

Decision4 compared
TERRACOTTA ARMY: HOW TO GET THERE · XI'AN

Choose the Terracotta Army route that fits where you stay: metro and bus, train or a direct coach. The museum ticket needs advance attention, but ordinary transport does not, so do not confuse a ride with an admission channel.

The short answer

Ifit is your first visit, you are staying near the Bell Tower and have no Chinese phone numberthen

Metro Line 2 → 1 → 9 to Huaqingchi, Exit C, bus 613 or 602 to 兵马俑: single metro tickets from the machines for cash, bus fare on board, nothing to book, no touts. Book the museum ticket itself the day you fix your dates — that is the part that needs the passport, not the ride.

Ifyou have only half a daythen

Leave the wall by 8:00, metro + 613 straight to the pits, and do the pits plus the free shuttle to Lishan Garden (about 1.5 hours each by the museum's own count); skip the palace and do not spend the morning hunting for Bus 5. If you are two or more, taxi the last 6 km to buy back the bus time.

Ifyou want one vehicle and no changes, and you can make a phone call in Chinesethen

The Qinfeng-depot coach: Line 3 to Tonghuamen, Exit D, 310 m. Ring 029-86691444 the day before for the timetable and how to pay (the museum prints neither), take the 8:00, and come back by bus 613 / 602 and Metro Line 9 rather than the 16:00 last coach. Ignore the yellow minibuses at Bell Tower.

Ifyou are at the old Xi'an station, or arriving by slow train, with a 12306 accountthen

Take the train: C182 at 07:15 or K2096 at 07:39 to Lintong station (¥5-10, about 20 minutes), then a licensed taxi 6.5 km east to the gate. Book the return before you go in — the 15:19 is the last afternoon train, then nothing until 18:48.

Ifyou are travelling with small children or older parentsthen

The metro leg has escalators at all three changes, but the 613 / 602 are ordinary step-up buses — take a licensed taxi or DiDi from Huaqingchi for the last 6 km, or for the whole 40 km if the changes are too many. At the museum, free wheelchair loan is in the visitor centre inside the North Gate; note that under-16s and over-65s go free only with Chinese ID, and the palace gives foreign children free entry only under 1.2 m.

Ifyou did not get a Terracotta Army ticketthen

Do not go to the pits: no ticket, no entry, and there is no walk-up window. Try a reputable hotel concierge booking with your passport details for another day — never a street tout. If you still want the Lintong day, Huaqing Palace sells at the gate and on its English site with a passport, and the mountain is on the same ¥120 ticket.

Ifyou want the fewest people around youthen

A weekday, off the public holidays (the May Day cap goes up to 75,000, not down); leave the wall by 8:00 so you are at the gate for the 8:30 opening and at the pits by 9:30 with the first crowd already inside; Pits 2 and 3 and the bronze chariots at Lishan Garden are thinner than Pit 1; the palace after 15:00 when the tour buses have moved on.

Ifsomeone at the railway station or your hostel offers 'Bus 5' or a cheap 'Terracotta Army bus'then

Say no: the real 306 has not left from the station since October 2019, and a 'bus' asking ¥20-30 or promising a guide is a private coach with shopping stops. The real bus is queue-and-pay-on-board, ¥7, at a marked stop; if you cannot find that queue in a few minutes, walk to the metro.

Ifyou want the evening show at the palace after the pitsthen

Check the Line 9 last train from Huaqingchi before choosing a show after 20:35 — the timetable is not on any page we could read, and a taxi back to the wall is 40-odd kilometres.

Where it starts
From Bell Tower: Line 2 to Beidajie, change to Line 1 towards Fangzhicheng, change to Line 9 towards Qinling West, ride to the terminus Huaqingchi, Exit C, 197 m to the Huaqingchi bus stop, then Lintong bus 613 (to 秦俑村) or 602 (to 秦兵马俑) to the 兵马俑 (Bingmayong / Terracotta Army) stop and a 170 m walk. From Xi'an North: Line 2 → 1 → 9; from the railway station: Line 4 to Wulukou → 1 → 9. The museum's third option is a direct coach from the Qinfeng depot, 310 m from Tonghuamen station Exit D on Line 3 (museum transport page) · 2026-09-11
Fare
Metro by distance plus a local bus fare of a few yuan, paid per ride: metro single tickets from the machines (cash and card acceptance varies by station — carry small notes) or the Xi'an metro QR code in Alipay / WeChat; bus in cash or transit code. Direct-coach fare and frequency are not on the museum's page · 2026-09-11
Door to door
About 90 minutes from the city wall (our entry's own estimate: three changes and a bus); the museum times the whole trip from the airport at about 2 h 30 min by metro and bus, and the direct coach at about 2 h 26 min from the airport · 2026-09-11
Frequency & last run
No official 2026 timetable was read — check the Line 9 last train from Huaqingchi before choosing any evening plan; the metro route runs later than the old bus. 613 fills at Huaqingchi on weekends, 602 is the slower stopping fallback — take whichever is loading · 2026-09-11
Telling the real bus (touts)
Nothing to tell apart: there is no 'fake bus' to meet on the metro. The one trap is geography — Huaqingchi is the Line 9 terminus, not the pits: bus 613 / 602 or a 6 km taxi still separates it from the museum. For the taxi use licensed cabs or DiDi only, never the car offered to you outside the station (city transport enforcement notice, May 2026; complaints 12345 / 12328) · 2026-09-11
Huaqing Palace on the way?
Yes, built in: Huaqing Palace is at Exit B / C of the same metro station. Do the museum first by bus and the palace on the way back — the return leg then needs no bus at all, and you take the metro home from the palace gate · 2026-09-11
Best for
Everyone, by default: first-timers, holders of a timed ticket, anyone without a Chinese phone; groups of two or more can taxi the last 6 km
The route the museum prints and the only one with no touts on it — three changes and a bus, about 90 minutes from the wall, not a scenic ride. Leave the wall by 8:00 to be at the pits by 9:30 with the 8:30 crowd already inside; on weekends the 613 fills at Huaqingchi, so take the 602 if it is the one loading. The trap is the terminus: Huaqingchi is the palace, not the pits, and 6 km of bus or taxi still lie ahead. If you are two or more, a licensed taxi or DiDi for that last 6 km costs little more per head and saves the bus hunt — just never the car offered to you outside the station.

Huaqing Palace on the way?

Best for
Anyone already at the old station or arriving by slow train; budget travellers who can book on 12306 with a passport
The cheap, quick leg nobody mentions: twenty minutes and ¥5-10 from the old station to Lintong, on real trains with real timetables — twelve out, nine back. It is not door-to-door: the train leaves from Xi'an station north of the wall, not Xi'an North, it needs a 12306 booking in your passport (e-mail contact is allowed, and a first booking may need a one-off window check with the passport original), and Lintong station leaves you 6.5 km from the gate with a taxi still to take. Do not plan on an afternoon train home — there is nothing between 15:19 and 18:48; either catch the 15:19 or come back by bus and Metro Line 9. And do not look for 'Lintong East': 12306 has one Lintong, and it is this one.

Best for
People who want one vehicle and no changes, can confirm the day's timetable by phone, and are happy to come back by bus and metro after 16:00
The museum's own answer for people who want one seat and no changes — and the museum tells you where it leaves from and nothing else. Everything you need to plan around is a 2024 figure from one reposted notice: ¥30, half-hourly 8:00-14:00, last coach back 16:00, a phone number. Do not go without ringing 029-86691444 the day before, and do not expect the 16:00 return to fit a full visit — the museum checks tickets until 17:00, so go out by coach and come back by bus 613 / 602 and Metro Line 9. The trap is the name: the yellow minibuses at Bell Tower and Dayan Pagoda are a different company with shopping stops, and the coach-station coach is a third.

Telling the real bus (touts)
The test is procedure, not paint: at the real bus you queue at a marked stop, board and pay on board — it never sold tickets in advance or return tickets (2017 ticket-reseller page, not official; the '306工人先锋号' windscreen sign and conductor are history). A 'bus' asking ¥20-30 or promising a guide is a private coach with shopping stops; anyone at the railway station selling 'Bus 5' is one — the real 306 has not left from there since October 2019. If you cannot find the official queue within a few minutes, do not let anyone 'help': walk to the metro · 2026-09-11
Huaqing Palace on the way?
Not checked — our bus entry says nothing about a palace stop. The palace's own official English site still lists 'Tourist Line 5 (Bus 306) for a direct route' to the palace, but gives no departure point; whether today's 306 stops at the palace gate is unconfirmed · 2026-09-11

People who enjoy the hunt and have ¥7 in cash; nobody holding a timed slot at the pits
A thirty-year legend that survived a 2019 cancellation threat, and the reason 'fake Bus 5' is a phrase. Do not plan a timed ticket around it: we cannot tell you the current stop from an official source, the museum has stopped recommending it, and the holiday queue at the real stop is exactly where the touts work. What it still has is the ¥7 fare paid on board with cash — the one thing a private coach cannot imitate, because the coach asks ¥20-30 and promises a guide. Unless you enjoy the hunt, take the metro; if you do try, the rule is queue, board, pay on board, and walk away from anyone who says 'this way to Bus 5'.

For groups of two or more with a fixed morning who want a seat each and will confirm by phone; not anyone who cannot get through on a Chinese-language line.

Tourist Bus 5 (route 306)

游 5(306 路)

For return visitors who know the stop and want the ¥7 ride; not first-timers, not anyone with a slot to keep.
