Which Museum First?

WHICH MUSEUM FIRST? · XI'AN

Choose your first Xi’an museum by subject, location and how reliably you can enter. The main history museum, Qin-Han branch, city museum, Beilin and Hanyangling demand different plans, and the hardest ticket is not automatically the best fit.

The short answer

Ifit is your first visit, you book with a passport and have no Chinese phone numberthen

The Qin-Han Branch: walk in with the passport, no booking, free, 666 m from Line 14. Try for the main museum only if you can be on its WeChat official account at 17:00 five days out; the branch is the one you can count on.

Ifthe main museum's free tickets are gonethen

Three ways round it, in order: buy the paid Tang murals gallery or special-exhibition ticket online — the official rule says its buyers need not book the free ticket; go to the Qin-Han Branch instead, walk-in with a passport; or, if you are staying inside the wall, Xi'an Museum, where the west-gate ticket office handles passports and a same-day QR at the gate has worked on weekdays (it needs a Chinese app).

Ifyou only have half a daythen

Stay inside the wall: Beilin (two hours, no closed day, ¥85, passport number on the ticket site) or Xi'an Museum (two hours, free, booked, closed Tuesdays). Do not start for the Qin-Han Branch or Hanyangling — forty minutes to an hour each way, or 40 km with no metro.

Ifyou are bringing children or someone who walks slowlythen

The Qin-Han Branch: lifts and ramps, no queue, and children under 1.4 m or 6 enter with an adult without documents, two per adult. Hanyangling's underground hall has ramps, lifts and a level glass floor but long park paths. The main museum lends wheelchairs and pushchairs at the service desk; Beilin's old courtyards have thresholds and steps into the stele halls.

Ifyou want to avoid the crowdsthen

A weekday at the Qin-Han Branch (it has never had queues) or Hanyangling (the underground hall rarely queues). If you must do the main museum, take the 8:30 slot; at Beilin book the 9:00 first slot and go to Room 2 and the Nestorian Stele before the tour groups. Avoid Xi'an Museum on public holidays, in the May hydrangea weeks and at dusk.

Ifyou are flying in or out and have a few hours to sparethen

The two north of the river: the Qin-Han Branch on Line 14 (airport ↔ Xi'an North) and Hanyangling, a 20-minute stop on the airport road — book Hanyangling before you land. The Terracotta Army is 60 km the other way and does not combine.

Ifyou are here on a Monday or a Tuesdaythen

Until 14 Nov 2026 neither branch of the History Museum closes; after that the main museum closes Mondays and the Qin-Han Branch Tuesdays. Xi'an Museum closes every Tuesday. Beilin and Hanyangling never close — they are the safe Tuesday.

Getting there
778 m from Xiaozhai station (Lines 2/3) or 834 m from Dayanta station (Lines 3/4) — the museum's own figures; Dayanta is the better exit if you are pairing it with the pagoda. Walking time: not checked · 2026-09-11
Ticket
Free but ticketed; the Tang murals gallery and special exhibitions are paid separately, and by the official rule a paid ticket bought online lets you in without the free booking. Murals price: not checked · 2026-09-11
Booking & passport
WeChat official account 陕西历史博物馆 only, in Chinese: tickets released 17:00 five days ahead, timed slots, pre-fill visitor details, then tap 'Book' (预约) at 17:00 — a pre-fill alone is not a booking. Passport is listed as a valid document; bring the original, the gate matches person, document and order. One order per ID per day, four in 30 days, three per WeChat official account per week; no-shows blocked 180 days; no third-party sellers, no walk-up · 2026-09-11
Closed days / hours
No closed day until 14 Nov 2026 (the Monday closure is suspended), then Mondays again; 8:30-19:00, entry ends 18:00 — the English site's 'last entry 17:30, closed Mondays' is out of date · 2026-03-10
Crowds
Capped at 10,000 a day while the galleries are refitted (from 15 Mar 2026, to be adjusted), so emptier inside than its reputation and harder to book; the 8:30 slot is quietest, the queue outside is the same all day. Holidays ran 17,500 slots and 7:30-20:30 — the easiest booking, not the hardest · 2026-09-11
How long
Not checked — our entry has no duration; halls reopen in stages during the refit (Hejiacun gold hall back 28 Mar, murals gallery 1 May 2026), so a closed hall is not a ticket mistake · 2026-09-11
English
Bilingual labels in the main galleries; free volunteer guiding at the service desk; paid 90-minute premium tour ¥300 per group of up to 10 in Chinese — English tours cost double the Chinese rate (¥600 vs ¥300 for the 90-min tour). The English website is stale — use the Chinese guide page · 2026-09-11
Best for
Anyone who can be on WeChat at 17:00 five days out, or is willing to pay for the murals ticket; the only place for the Tang gold
The best museum in the city and the worst booking system in it. Do not turn up hoping for a walk-up: there is none, and the touts outside are selling nothing the museum recognises. If you are not on WeChat at 17:00 five days out, plan on the paid Tang murals ticket — the official rule says its buyers need not book the free ticket — or go to the Qin-Han branch instead. The trade-off with the branch is the collection: the Qin and Han halls moved out there, the Tang galleries and the Hejiacun hoard stayed here. Holidays, oddly, are the easiest days to book.

Getting there

Best for
Passport holders who could not get the main museum's ticket; anyone arriving or leaving by air on Line 14; the morning half of a Qin-Han day with Hanyangling
The plan B that is a plan A for a foreign passport: you walk in with it, no app, no 17:00 scramble, and there has never been a queue. The price is distance — forty minutes to an hour each way from the old town along new-district roads — and the collection: the Qin and Han halls are here, the Tang gold is not. Worth it as the walk-in alternative when the main museum is booked out or as the airport-corridor stop; not worth it as a fourth museum in three days. Pair it with Hanyangling on the same Line 14 corridor, and after 14 November 2026 stay away on Tuesdays.

Best for
People staying in the old town whose main-museum booking failed; anyone who wants the Tang Chang'an model and a pagoda garden in one stop
The quieter, smaller, easier free museum — but a booking, not a walk-in, and closed on Tuesdays. With a passport, do not fight the turnstile: the rules send you to the ticket office at the west gate. The traps are in the data: every hours-and-booking figure here is a platform repost because the museum's own site would not load, and a new ticketing system in August 2026 may have moved the WeChat menus — the gate QR and the ticket office are the fallbacks. Skip it on a two-day visit unless the main museum's booking fails; if it does, this is the old-town answer and the Qin-Han branch is the cross-river one.

Best for
Calligraphy people and anyone who asks for the Nestorian Stele by name; the half-day museum inside the wall with no closed day
Two hours of carved Chinese text: without the paid guide or a real interest in calligraphy, most visitors see stone tablets. Come for the Nestorian Stele and the sculpture hall, pay for the tour, and do not build a day around it. It is the only one of the five with a real ticket and the only one with neither a closed day nor a booking scramble — the ticket site takes a passport number and weekday mornings never hit the cap. The traps: the museum's own homepage popup still says ¥10 and 9:00-18:00, so trust the guide page; discounts are for Chinese citizens only; and the Nestorian Stele has moved since the 2025 north extension — ask at the desk, older guides' room numbers are wrong.

People who have seen the Terracotta Army and want the quiet, close-up version; the airport-corridor stop; the afternoon half of a Qin-Han day with the branch
Small figures under glass, not the big army: quieter, closer, darker, more archaeological than Lintong — and the one place in this table where you walk on glass above the pits. Do not treat it as a detour from the centre: no metro, 40 km, and the museum's own pages only tell drivers how to arrive. Do it from the airport or as the second half of a Qin-Han day with the branch. Book before you go (the notice describes no ticket window), and know that it names ID cards, not passports; a passport-booked QR should scan the same way, but phone if in doubt. Shaanxi History Museum (main)

陕历博本馆

The best museum in the city and the worst booking system in it. Do not turn up hoping for a walk-up: there is none, and the touts outside are selling nothing the museum recognises. If you are not on WeChat at 17:00 five days out, plan on the paid Tang murals ticket — the official rule says its buyers need not book the free ticket — or go to the Qin-Han branch instead. The trade-off with the branch is the collection: the Qin and Han halls moved out there, the Tang galleries and the Hejiacun hoard stayed here. Holidays, oddly, are the easiest days to book. For first-timers who can work the WeChat release or will pay for the murals gallery; anyone who came for the Tang gold.

Worth it as the walk-in alternative when the main museum is booked out or as the airport-corridor stop; not worth it as a fourth museum in three days. Pair it with Hanyangling on the same Line 14 corridor, and after 14 November 2026 stay away on Tuesdays. Do it from the airport or as the second half of a Qin-Han day with the branch. Book before you go (the notice describes no ticket window), and know that it names ID cards, not passports; a passport-booked QR should scan the same way, but phone if in doubt. In winter the last entry is 16:30. For Terracotta veterans, airport-day travellers, and anyone with a car who wants an empty museum.
