Shanghai grew outward from the Bund: the west bank of the Huangpu River (Puxi) is layer upon layer of old-town lanes and colonial-era streetscapes, while Lujiazui across the water (Pudong) only rose in the 1990s — one river apart, a hundred years apart.

Getting around
directions_boatJinling Road East Ferry Terminal (金陵东路渡口, Puxi side)Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal (东昌路渡口, Pudong side)10 min · The commuter ferry locals actually use: a few yuan per crossing, pays with transit card or QR, and doubles as the cheapest river cruise with skyline views. Runs frequently in daytime; check last-boat times in the evening.
directions_walkThe Bund promenade (外滩, south end near Yan'an Road East)Yu Garden / City God Temple (豫园·城隍庙)15 min · Flat, straightforward walk into the old town via Renmin Road or the lanes off Zhongshan Road East. Doing Bund → Yu Garden → bazaar lunch as one morning loop is the standard first-day route.
directions_transitJing'an Temple Station (静安寺站, Line 2/7/14)East Nanjing Road Station (南京东路站, Line 2/10)10 min · Direct on Line 2, about four stops — this is the spine connecting the Jing'an hotel belt to the Bund area. Avoid exiting at People's Square interchange by mistake; it is one of the largest and most confusing stations in the city.
directions_transitEast Nanjing Road Station (南京东路站, Line 2/10)Lujiazui Station (陆家嘴站, Line 2/14)5 min · One stop on Line 2 under the river — the fastest Bund-to-skyline hop. Trains are packed on weekend evenings; the river-crossing Bund Sightseeing Tunnel nearby is widely considered an overpriced novelty.
Where to stay

First visit: stay along Metro Line 2 or Line 10 between Jing'an Temple and East Nanjing Road — walkable to the Bund, direct trains to both airports. Ask hotels for walking minutes to the nearest metro entrance, not meters.
