Which Way Up Huashan?

Decision4 compared
WHICH WAY UP HUASHAN? · XI'AN

Choose your Huashan route before booking cable cars: return west, cross to the north, or climb overnight. Direction controls effort and descent timing, and the mountain is the wrong place to discover that your legs or the last ride cannot finish the plan.

The short answer

Ifit is your first time, your fitness is ordinary and you have one daythen

West Peak cable car up on the 7:00 slot, South Peak (the plank walk is suspended from 15 September 2026), and the same car down — half the loop, all the height. Walk the ridge to the North Peak car only if your legs say yes by the South Peak.

Ifyou have a passport, no Chinese phone number, and the WeChat booking will not take youthen

Do not turn up hoping for a window — the notices say there is no regular ticket window at peak times and passports are never mentioned. Book entry + shuttle + cable on Ctrip / Trip.com, which the notices' wording allows as an 'authorised platform', or have your Xi'an hotel or a Huayin hostel book all three; check the slot and the ID type match.

Ifyou only have half a day on the mountainthen

West Peak car up and down, South Peak and back, no plank walk — or the budget version, North Peak car up and down and the North Peak itself. Do not start the five-peak loop after noon: the last uplift is 16:00 and the ridge is unlit.

Ifyou are with children, older parents, or anyone with a heart, breathing or knee conditionthen

West Peak car up and the same car down, and stop at whatever the stairs allow — even with both cable cars the ridge is stairs and chained paths. No night climb: the notices advise against it for exactly these people.

Ifthe day you wanted is sold out or the forecast has turned windythen

Move the day, not the route: a Tuesday in April or late October is the mountain at its best, unscanned tickets can be refunded through the channel you bought on, and a windy forecast means the West Peak car — the whole day — may not run. Do not go to the gate without a booking.

Ifyou want the mountain without the crowdthen

Weekday, first shuttle after the 7:00 opening, and stay away from 15 July-10 October and May Day, which the notices themselves flag for long queues; on the ridge the Middle Peak and the East-to-North stairs are the quiet parts, and a weeknight night climb outside July-August is a handful of people.

Ifthe sunrise is the point and you have a spare nightthen

The night climb — only if you are fit and kitted: book the night slot, leave the gate at 23:00-midnight, and plan a rest day after, not a museum. Beds at the top exist (East and North Peak guesthouses, platform reports) for climbing by day and sleeping for the sunrise, but a Huayin hostel has to call for them.

West Peak cable car

西峰索道(太华索道)Open the place →
Where you start
From the visitor centre, the West line shuttle winds about 40 minutes up Wengyu valley to the base (a separate ticket, platform ~¥40); then 4 km of cabin, about 20 minutes, landing just below the West Peak (2,000 m) on the summit ridge — the South Peak and the plank walk are twenty minutes' walk · 2026-09-11
Entry + ride prices
Entry ¥160 in the current season (Mar-Nov; the 2026 promotion halves it to ¥80 until 10 Oct — seasons differ, notice of 2026-07-15); this car about ¥140 one way and the shuttle about ¥40 are platform figures the notices do not confirm — 'check the current price'; entry, cable and shuttle are 'different ticket types' · 2026-09-11
Effort / time
The car does the climb; what is left is the stairs from the upper station to the ridge and then whatever you choose — South Peak and back is a half day, the full five-peak walk to the North Peak car is 3-4 hours of ridge (5-6 with stops, by our loop entry). Steps at both stations; cabins take 8 · 2026-09-11
Booking & passport
Same Chinese real-name booking as the entry ticket — book entry + West line shuttle + West Peak cable together on the WeChat official account 华山景区 or an authorised platform; a 'separate ticket type' in the notices' wording; visitors report the base station selling cable tickets on the day but no official page says so, and the entry window is shut at peak times. Passport: not addressed in the notices · 2026-07-15
Weather that stops it
'Thunderstorms, strong wind and severe convection may suspend the cable cars' (official) — this car is the day: a windy forecast means skip the mountain, and ask at the visitor centre before buying. If it stops while you are up, the North Peak car is the exit; no refund path is published for a car stopped after you are up · 2026-07-15
Crowds
The mountain's crowd funnel: take the first shuttle after the 7:00 opening, because the base queue reaches an hour or more by 10:00 on summer weekends and two hours is not unusual; noon is the dead spot; the downward queue at the upper station peaks 15:00-17:00 · 2026-09-11
Best for
Every first-timer and every day-tripper: the only way onto the summit ridge without a 4-hour climb
The most expensive twenty minutes in Shaanxi and the one purchase that turns Huashan into a day trip: it lands you on the summit ridge, with the South Peak and the plank walk twenty minutes away. Do not go on a windy forecast — the car is the day, and there is no published refund for a cable car stopped after you are up. Do not arrive after 10:00 on a summer weekend, when the base queue is an hour or more. The traps: entry, shuttle and cable car are three tickets (buy all of them online together, because the entry window is shut at peak times), and 'up to 16:00' is the last uplift, not the last descent; the ridge paths are unlit, so start down by 17:00.

North Peak cable car

北峰索道(三特索道)Open the place →
Where you start
From the visitor centre the North line shuttle is the short one — about 15 minutes (platform ~¥20) to the base in Wafeng valley; about 8 minutes of cabin to the North Peak (1,614 m), which is the foot of the summit ridge, not the top · 2026-09-11
Entry + ride prices
Entry the same ¥160 / promo ¥80 (notice of 2026-07-15); this car about ¥80 one way and the shuttle about ¥20 — platform figures, 'check the current price'; a separate ticket type in the notices' wording · 2026-09-11
Effort / time
The cheapest way up and the wrong end of the mountain: from the upper station it is another 2 hours of the 'Sky Ladder' stairs to the South and East Peaks; as the way down at the end of a West-up day it is the natural direction. Steps at both stations and a long stair from the upper station to the ridge; cabins take 8 · 2026-09-11
Booking & passport
Same as the West line: the cable ticket is bought with the real-name entry booking on the official channels, a 'separate ticket type' in the notices' wording, scanned at the base; the base station selling on the day is visitor hearsay, not an official page. Passport: not addressed · 2026-07-15
Weather that stops it
Same weather stops as the West line (official); when the West line is stopped the North line is often still running — and when both stop, the walk down from the North Peak to Yuquan Temple is 3-4 hours of stairs, so do not ride it up late · 2026-07-15
Crowds
Busier per cabin than the West line, but the shorter wait going down: the upper-station queue is shortest 14:00-15:30, before the West-up crowd arrives along the ridge; if the West shuttle queue is huge at 7:00, this is the faster start · 2026-09-11
Best for
The way down at the end of the classic day; the budget half-day (up, the North Peak itself, down) for anyone not going to the summit
Use it to come down, not up. The North Peak is the low end of the ridge, so going up this way means two hours of stairs before you reach the peaks people come for; West up, North down gives the summit without the climb. Its own product is the budget half-day: cable up and down and the North Peak itself, the ridge seen from below and the 'Sky Ladder' stairs — you will not see the plank walk. Do not ride it up late in the afternoon: if wind stops both cars while you are above, the walk down to Yuquan Temple is 3-4 hours of stairs.

Five-peak loop (West up, North down)

五峰环线(西上北下)Open the place →
Where you start
Start at the West Peak cable car's upper station and finish at the North Peak station: West Peak (2,083 m) → South Peak (2,155 m, the top; the plank walk off its side) → East Peak (sunrise terrace, Yaozi Fanshen) → Middle Peak → 'Sky Ladder' stairs down to the North Peak (1,614 m) → cable car · 2026-09-11
Entry + ride prices
No ticket of its own — the ridge is in the ¥160 entry (promo ¥80 until 10 Oct, notice of 2026-07-15); what you pay for is two cable cars (about ¥140 + ¥80, platform) and two shuttles (about ¥40 + ¥20), plus the plank walk or Yaozi Fanshen at about ¥30 each at the gate if you want them (both suspended since 15 September 2026) · 2026-09-11
Effort / time
A hike, not a walk: five to six hours with stops on thousands of stone steps, chains on the steep sections, an exposed ridge at 2,000 m; the plank-walk queue can add two more. Hiking shoes, gloves for the chains in winter; the notices ask you to 'plan the route to your fitness and avoid continuous high-intensity climbing' · 2026-07-15
Booking & passport
Nothing to book for the loop itself; entry, both cable cars and both shuttles booked in advance in the same Chinese flow, with the ID used for the entry — passport not addressed · 2026-09-11
Weather that stops it
Cable cars, ridge paths and the plank walk 'may be suspended' in thunderstorms, strong wind and severe convection (official); stone steps are slick after rain; if the West car stops while you are on the ridge the North car is the exit, and both stopped means 3-4 hours of stairs down to Yuquan Temple · 2026-07-15
Crowds
Walk it clockwise (West → South → East → Middle → North): the West Peak cable-car crowd moves the same way but the ridge spreads it out; the South Peak summit and the East Peak terrace are the crowd points, the Middle Peak and the East-to-North stairs are quieter; the North Peak descent queue is shortest before 15:00 · 2026-09-11
Best for
Fit visitors with a full day who want all five peaks; not for knees, hearts or sandals
The route that fits the mountain into one day, and the one to do if your legs are good: on the ridge by 8:30, South Peak by 9:30, East Peak by 11:00, North Peak by 15:00, cable down and shuttle by 16:00. Do not do it in reverse (North up means two hours of 'Sky Ladder' stairs before the ridge), and do not let the plank-walk queue eat the descent, because the last cable down is 19:00 in season, the ridge is unlit and both cars stop in wind. Carry a litre of water and lunch from Xi'an: summit shops charge several times town prices and there are no refill points. Anyone unsure should do half of it (West Peak car up, South Peak, the same car down): half the loop, all the height.

Effort / time
The hardest thing in this atlas: 4-6 hours of stairs in the dark with chains on the steep sections, then a cold wait on the terrace; the notices say it is 'not recommended for the elderly, children, pregnant women or anyone with cardiovascular, respiratory or joint conditions' and ask climbers to go in company with lighting, warm and rain gear · 2026-07-15
Booking & passport
Official: 'the Huashan Gate hiking route is open 24 hours; visitors must check in within the booked time slot' — book the evening/night slot of the ordinary entry ticket on the official channels, not a daytime one; passport not named in the notices; if the app defeats you, a hostel in Huayin will book it · 2026-07-15
Weather that stops it
The gate 'may be adjusted or suspended for extreme weather, geological hazard, overload or safety control' (official); a bad idea in wind, rain or ice, and the sunrise clouds over about one morning in three; winter means ice on the stairs, the plank walk closed and a 7:00 sunrise · 2026-07-15
Crowds
Weeknights outside July-August and holidays are a handful of climbers; on May Day and summer weekends the stairs above the North Peak are a slow single file and the East Peak terrace at dawn holds hundreds — leave the gate at 23:00-midnight, earlier rather than later · 2026-09-11
Best for
Fit, kitted hikers with a spare night and a rest day after; never as an add-on to a day trip from Xi'an
The other way up, and the one Chinese students grew up on: 4-6 hours of stairs in the dark for a sunrise from the East Peak terrace. It is official (the hiking gate is open 24 hours for booked visitors and the notices carry a night-climb safety paragraph), but it is not a day trip: you arrive in Huayin the evening before, book the night slot rather than a daytime one, and come down mid-morning by cable car. Do not do it in wind, rain or ice, and not if you are older, with children, or have a heart, breathing or joint condition; the scenic area says so in every notice. The traps: nothing is open on the route at night, so carry six hours of water and food; the cable cars do not run at night, so there is no shortcut up; and the sunrise clouds over one morning in three.

西峰索道(太华索道)
