798 and Sanlitun in Half a Day

Decision5 compared
798 AND SANLITUN IN HALF A DAY · BEIJING

Decide whether you want an art afternoon at 798 or an evening around Sanlitun and the Liangma River. They are not close, and much of 798 shuts on Mondays, so forcing both into one half-day usually weakens both.

The short answer

Ifyou are working out what costs moneythen

Almost nothing. The 798 zone, Taikoo Li, the Sanlitun lanes and the Liangma River banks are all free. UCCA sells tickets per show (about ¥150 is our estimate; the museums in 798 run ¥60-150 a show), bought at the front desk with a passport. The Liangma boat is ¥35 by day and ¥90 at night on the 2025 product page.

Ifyour day is a Mondaythen

Do not go to 798: UCCA is closed and so are most galleries and all the museums, so you get locked halls and coffee. Do Sanlitun and the Liangma River instead, which have no closing day. Dongyue Temple's halls are shut on Mondays too.

Ifyou want both 798 and Sanlitunthen

Make them two half-days. 798 is about 15 km and 40 minutes by taxi from Sanlitun, and our entry says to pair it with Wangjing or the airport road. Do 798 after 11:00 on a weekday afternoon (Line 12 Gaojiayuan, not the unopened Line 14 station of the same name). Keep Sanlitun for the evening, when the bars run late and dinner is easy.

Ifyou want the Liangma River at nightthen

The walk is free and open 24 h: go at dusk from Liangmaqiao (Line 10, exit B) east to Solana. For the boat, go to the Solana pier (Line 14 Zaoying, exit A). There is no booking; you queue and it leaves when full, about every 20 minutes. Night sailings run 18:00-22:00, last boat 21:30, from 15 March and weather permitting, and in November assume there are none.

Ifyou are out late in Sanlitunthen

Drink in the lanes behind and east of Taikoo Li, not on Bar Street, where our estimate is roughly double the ¥40-60 lane beer. Walk past any bar with a tout at the door. After 01:00, use a ride-hail app or walk to Gongti North Rd rather than bargaining with taxis at the South Village square.

Don't get this wrong
Not 751 D-Park next door, a separate former gas works with its own fashion venues; the two adjoin on the east side. Not Songzhuang either, the artists' village 25 km east · 2026-09-11
Go Tuesday to Sunday, after 11:00, for two or three specific shows or for the buildings themselves. The zone is free. The museums cost ¥60-150 a show, and the cafés close early with the galleries, so do not plan dinner here. It has become a café-and-selfie district. Come on a weekday afternoon and it is still a gallery district.

Don't get this wrong
UCCA is one museum in 798, not the zone's ticket office; the zone is free. Not UCCA Dune or UCCA Clay, the sister museums outside Beijing · 2026-09-11
The one ticket in 798, and the snag for a foreign visitor is buying it. WeChat and the apps want a Chinese phone number and payment, and international online ticketing is only 'coming soon'. Go to the front desk. Check the current show first, because there is no permanent collection. Never come on a Monday. A weekday at the 10:00 opening is the empty time.

What you see & how long
The open-air mall of 2008 that turned Sanlitun into Beijing's shop window: low buildings around lanes and squares, lit like a stage after dark. Useful for errands: cards work, English is spoken, and there is a pharmacy and SIM cards in the basement · 2026-09-11

Crowds & when to go
Weekend evenings the South Village square is a fashion parade. Weekday mornings before 11:00 the lanes are empty and the shops half open. The North Village is calm at any hour · 2026-09-11
Don't get this wrong
Two villages across one road. The South Village (19 Sanlitun Rd) is the busy one with Apple and the food basement; the North Village (11 Sanlitun Rd) has the luxury brands and quieter courtyards. Neither is the old Bar Street north of the North Village · 2026-09-11
A good mall, and the only reason to route through it is convenience. You get cards, English, a pharmacy, SIM cards, tax-refund forms at the concierge and an easy late dinner. Eat upstairs or in the North Village courtyards rather than at the chains on the square. If you are not staying in Chaoyang, it is not worth a trip on its own.

Sanlitun nightlife

三里屯夜生活Open the place →
What you see & how long
Three layers: the old Bar Street on Sanlitun Rd north of the mall, the lanes east of and behind the mall where the good bars are, and the clubs around Gongti, a 10-minute walk west. The one part of the city where English is the default after 22:00 · 2026-09-11
Ticket / price
Public streets, no ticketing; venues charge by consumption, some clubs a cover. A beer in the lanes runs ¥40-60, cocktails ¥80-120, roughly double on Bar Street (our estimate) · 2026-09-11
Hours & closed days
Streets at all hours; bars from the afternoon until the small hours (city tourism site). No closing day · 2026-09-11
Booking & ID
None, except concerts and club nights sold on Chinese apps, where passports are accepted as ID at the door · 2026-09-11
Getting there
Line 10 Tuanjiehu station exit A, then north up Gongti North Rd to Sanlitun Rd. After 01:00 ride-hail waits spike and taxis at the South Village square may refuse the meter: use the app or walk to Gongti North Rd · 2026-09-11
Crowds & when to go
Friday and Saturday from 22:00 are the crush, with touts thickest on Bar Street; Sunday to Thursday the lanes are relaxed · 2026-09-11
Don't get this wrong
'Dirty Street' behind the South Village was cleared around 2017 and no longer exists. Not Houhai's bar strip either, 8 km west by the lakes · 2026-09-11
Go for the lanes behind and east of Taikoo Li and along Sanlitun North Lane, and skip Bar Street itself. By our editorial view it is touts, cover bands and doubled prices. Treat any 'ladies' bar' or 'tea house' with a tout at the door as an overcharge and walk on. The practical problem is the taxi home after 01:00, not safety.
