The 1950s electronics works in the north-east suburbs — sawtooth-roofed halls built to East German designs for the state 'Joint Factory 718' — that artists began renting as studios around 2000 and that is now a 600,000 m² district of galleries, museums, cafés, design shops and Maoist slogans still on the walls. The zone itself is open ground with no ticket; the museums inside (UCCA is the anchor) charge and mostly close on Mondays. It is 15 km from Sanlitun and until 2025 awkward to reach; Line 12's Gaojiayuan station now opens next to it.
EntranceLine 12 Gaojiayuan station, 5-10 minutes on foot (UCCA's own directions); or Line 14 Wangjing South or Jiangtai, about 15 minutes; taxis drop at the Jiuxianqiao Rd gates

Beat the crowds
Weekend afternoons are the crush around UCCA and the main east-west street; weekday afternoons after the galleries open (11:00 for many) are calm. On Mondays most museum doors are shut, so the zone is empty but pointless.
Language
Gallery labels are mostly bilingual; the zone's own signage is Chinese with English street names. UCCA's site has an English version.
