Which Great Wall Section?
Choose the Great Wall section that fits your transport, passport booking, fitness and tolerance for crowds. The names look interchangeable in photos, but the wrong section can mean a hard transfer, an unusable booking route or far more walking than expected.
The short answer
Mutianyu: passport, Chinese ID and foreign permanent-resident card are all listed at booking, up to 30 days ahead, and you enter by scanning the same passport. If the booking fails, Badaling sells at the gate.
Badaling — be at the gate for the 6:30 peak-season opening, do the north climb first, and stay off public holidays; take the south side if the north is a queue.
Simatai: the ¥150 night bundle is the only lit night wall; sleep in the water town. For sunrise without the town, a Jinshanling guesthouse.
Jinshanling — 3-4 hours, another province, plan the return leg first and confirm the 2019-era bus and cable-car figures the night before.
Juyongguan on the way up the G6 — read the Cloud Platform, climb half of one flank, budget ¥45.
Say no: as our Badaling entry warns, these tours deliver you to Shuiguan, 3 km down the same road with its own ticket, and the day is spent in shops. Book a section yourself and take the train or a bus.

One by one
Badaling
八达岭Go for the train and the scale, not for solitude. Do not go on a public holiday, and do not go after 10:00 — by then the north towers are a queue. The traps: cheap 'Badaling day tours' sold around Qianmen that deliver you to Shuiguan, 3 km down the same road with its own ticket; and the official site's 'foreigner ticketing' button, which is Trip.com, not a ticket office. Take the south side if you want the same wall with fewer people. For first-timers who want the train and can be there at 6:30; anyone doing Badaling + Ming Tombs by car.
Open the place →Mutianyu
慕田峪The section whose real-name booking works most predictably for foreign visitors, and the wall most people picture — fewer people than Badaling, no railway, so it is a bus-and-shuttle or car day. Do not turn up without a booking: you enter by scanning the passport you booked with. The traps: the cable car and the toboggan belong to two different companies and their tickets are not interchangeable, so pick your loop before you pay; a cable-car return ticket means coming back the same way; Jiankou, the wild wall you can see from tower 20, is closed to climbing — a guide offering it is taking you off the legal section. Night opening exists, but it is cancelled on the morning itself when the weather turns. For first-timers with a passport and no Chinese phone number; families with children over 1.2 m who will pay full price on the rides.
Open the place →Simatai & Gubei Water Town
司马台 · 古北水镇Two products with one owner, and the pricing shows it: a ¥40 wall ticket exists, but most routes to Simatai pass through the ¥120 town gate, and the night wall is only sold as a ¥150 bundle. Come for the night wall or for a stay-over; do not come for the wall alone in daylight — the open day route is short (towers 2-5) and the town is a replica. If you only want the wall, use the ticket office outside the town and accept the fixed shuttle hours (10:00-15:00 hourly). The traps: 'Gubeikou' on the railway is the old garrison town, not the water town; the Miyun high-speed-station shuttle stopped on 10 Sep 2026; Jinshanling next door is a separate Hebei ticket and the ridge link closed in 2010. For night-wall seekers and stay-over travellers; families who want a lit, easy wall with a hotel next to it.
Open the place →Jinshanling
金山岭The wild one: unrestored towers, brick stamped with the year and unit that fired it, and almost nobody. Do not treat it as a half-day from the city — it is in another province, Beijing day-trip buses and transit cards stop at the border, and you must plan the return leg before you leave. Do not go in the low season expecting the half-price ticket (there is none) or a running cable car at a known price (the ¥40 / ¥80 is a 2019 figure). The trap is the data itself: hours, prices and the weekend bus are 2019 listings because the scenic area's site did not answer — ask your guesthouse the night before. For hikers, photographers chasing sunrise, and anyone who has already done a restored section.
Juyongguan
居庸关A road runs through it: the G6 expressway and the old highway both thread the pass, so the fort is loud and the wall on both sides is a steep, exposed stair climb with little shade. It is the quick wall for a car day (90 minutes and you have seen it), not a substitute for a full section, and not worth a dedicated bus trip from the city. Do not go at midday in summer (no shade) and do not plan on the 6:30 opening at every ticket office — some open only from 8:30. Read the Cloud Platform's six-script sutras in the road before you climb; that is the part you will remember. Everything on hours and prices here is platform listings, not the site itself. For drivers doing Badaling + Ming Tombs who can add it for the price of a ticket; nobody making a special trip.
