The wall you can see at night and sleep under: Simatai keeps its unrestored Ming brickwork on a knife-edge ridge 120 km northeast in Miyun, and since 2014 the resort company that runs it has put a purpose-built 'ancient' canal town at its foot. To be clear — the town is a 2014 replica in the Wuzhen mould, the wall is the real thing — and the combination is the only realistic way to spend an evening on the Great Wall.

Language
The resort site wtown.com has a 中/English switch, and the municipal English portal carries an official English ticketing page (its July 2024 prices — Water Town CNY 140, Simatai wall CNY 40 with ticket check 9:00-15:00, night wall CNY 200; no reservation, tickets on site — no longer match the resort's current fares, which are what count). The FAQ page says the concierge desk at the visitor centre lends wheelchairs, pushchairs and walking sticks; English guiding is not listed.
