Forbidden City Sold Out — Now What?

FORBIDDEN CITY SOLD OUT — NOW WHAT? · BEIJING

Decide whether to keep chasing a Palace Museum cancellation or choose another major imperial sight. Resellers cannot create valid tickets, so judge whether you can still wait for the official channel, then consider Jingshan, Taimiao or the National Museum.

The short answer

Ifit is your first visit, you book with a passport and have no Chinese phone number, and you want inthen

Set an alarm for 20:00 Beijing time exactly seven days before your date and book on ticket.dpm.org.cn with the passport you will travel with — the ticketing page names the passport; add the Treasure and Clock galleries in the same booking. Missed the drop? Refunds return to the pool until 24:00 the day before, so keep refreshing the same channel rather than a reseller. The WeChat mini-program needs a real-name WeChat account.

Ifyou have half a day and no palace ticketthen

Jingshan at 6:30 opening or in the last hour of light for the roofs from above (¥2, an hour), then the Ancestral Temple for the inside at full scale (¥2 + ¥15 at the gate, halls Tue-Sun 9:00-17:00) — the two together are the no-ticket day, and both are walk-ups with no release time to chase.

Ifyou are with small children or someone elderlythen

Inside the palace expect steps, steep ramps and uneven paving (the museum's own notice), a one-way 1 km walk and no re-entry; suitcases go to the visitor centre west of Duanmen and are collected outside the north or east gate; over-60s pay half on ID. The Ancestral Temple is flat cypress grounds and empty; Jingshan is a 10-15 minute climb to the summit; the National Museum lends wheelchairs and pushchairs free for the day against ID and a ¥500 deposit and runs a green lane for over-60s at the North Gate.

Ifyou have no booking of any kindthen

Do not go to the Meridian Gate (no window, no same-day sale) and do not go to the National Museum's North Gate (nothing sold or reserved at the door). Walk-ups that still work: the Ancestral Temple at the gate, Zhongshan Park at the gate, Jingshan (¥2, though gate sale of day tickets is unconfirmed). The square itself now needs its own booking, so approach the palace area by the moat roads or from Tiananmen West.

Ifyou want the palace without the crowdthen

Inside: leave the axis for the Treasure Gallery in the east and the western palaces. Outside: Jingshan at opening or the last hour, never mid-afternoon after the palace closes; the Ancestral Temple on any ordinary day (crowds only for the April-May peonies and golden-hour wedding shoots); the National Museum on a weekday 13:30 session and never a Tuesday.

Ifyou want to stand on Tiananmen Square as wellthen

Book the square itself, 1-7 days ahead, with the passport you entered China on — the 2022 'a palace or museum booking is accepted at the checkpoint' FAQ has not been repeated and the palace now routes palace-only visitors around the square. The gate tower with the portrait is a fourth booking (¥15, no bags); the passage under it is free.

Ifsomeone offers you a same-day palace ticket, or a 'Palace Museum' site asks you to paythen

There is no same-day ticket and no window; the only channels are the '故宫博物院' mini-program and ticket.dpm.org.cn, one ticket per document per day, and a booking under someone else's passport number cannot be transferred. The Taipei 'Palace Museum' website is a different institution.

How to book & release time
The official '故宫博物院' WeChat mini-program (the notice's named channel) or the web ticketing site ticket.dpm.org.cn. Tickets for a date go on sale at 20:00 seven days before; no same-day tickets, no ticket window; one ticket per document per day; unused tickets refundable until 24:00 the day before and they go back into the pool. Three no-shows in 180 days block you for 60 · 2026-09-11
Passport & Chinese phone
Passport is listed for booking and gate check on the official ticketing page (with HK / Macau / Taiwan permits and the foreign PR card); the gate check is a passport scan, no paper ticket. Whether the web flow completes without a mainland phone number is not stated on the museum's pages — 2025-26 traveller guides report that a passport number plus an e-mail address works on ticket.dpm.org.cn, which we have not tested ourselves; we once saw a language switch on the ticketing page, but a later static read found Chinese only. The mini-program needs a real-name WeChat account · 2026-09-11
Ticket
Current season (Apr-Oct) ¥60 — seasons differ, Nov-Mar ¥40; Treasure Gallery ¥10 and Clock Gallery ¥10 extra, separate tickets on the same release · 2026-09-11
Closed days & hours
Mondays (open on public-holiday Mondays); 1-7 October and Spring Festival are the hardest dates of the year to book. Current season (Apr-Oct) 8:30-17:00, entry until 16:00 — seasons differ (Nov-Mar to 16:30, entry until 15:30); morning-session bookings check in by 12:00, afternoon ones not before 11:00 · 2026-09-11
How long
Three hours is a sensible minimum for the axis plus one side gallery; it is a one-way walk of about 1 km from the Meridian Gate north to the Gate of Divine Prowess, no re-entry and no exit south · 2026-09-11
Distance from the palace
It is the palace. Meridian Gate is the only entrance: Line 1 Tiananmen East Exit A, then about 1 km north; a palace-only booking is routed along the East / West Tongzihe (moat) roads outside the square checkpoints — allow 30-45 minutes either way · 2026-09-11
What of the palace you get
All of it — the axis halls, the side courtyards, the Treasure and Clock galleries. The central axis is packed all day; the Treasure Gallery in the east and the western palaces are where the crowd thins · 2026-09-11
Best for
Anyone who caught the 20:00 release seven days out; nobody without a booking
The reference column: the constraint is the booking, not the day. Do not arrive without one — there is no ticket window and no same-day sale, and the staff at the Meridian Gate turn away dozens of foreign visitors every morning; if your dates are fixed and the release has passed, our advice is Jingshan and the Tiananmen area today, and another try on another day. Book with the passport you will travel with: a booking under a wrong passport number cannot be transferred, and date, session and names cannot be changed after purchase. Add the Treasure and Clock galleries at booking — the clock demonstrations are the best-value 20 minutes in the palace. The traps: the Taipei 'Palace Museum' site is a different institution; the Tiananmen gate tower with the portrait is a separate ¥15 ticket, not the entrance; and inside, the axis halls are a crowd all day while the east and west courtyards are not.

Jingshan Park

景山公园Open the place →
How to book & release time
Municipal-park ticketing, no release time to chase: the tourism-bureau page lists an online purchase link (no URL) on the '畅游公园' platform, and the West Gate keeps a staffed window (annual passes, 8:30-16:30). Whether day tickets are sold at the gate is not stated on any page we have read — we are asking the park · 2025-12-15
Passport & Chinese phone
Not stated: the '畅游公园' platform is real-name by ID number and whether a passport number is accepted online is not published; no phone-number rule is described either way · 2026-09-11
Ticket
¥2 (half ¥1); ¥10 (half ¥5) during the spring Peony Festival · 2026-09-11
Closed days & hours
Open daily — no closing day listed. Current season (Apr-Oct) 6:30-21:00, tickets until 20:30 — seasons differ (Nov-Mar 6:30-20:00, tickets until 19:30); the pavilions' own closing time is not published, so go up at least an hour before the ticket cutoff · 2026-09-11
How long
An hour: 10-15 minutes from the South Gate up to Wanchun Pavilion (our own pacing), then the ridge of five pavilions · 2026-09-11
Distance from the palace
Directly north: the South Gate faces the palace's north gate (Shenwu Gate) across Jingshan Front Street — 44 Jingshan West Street, Xicheng · 2026-09-11
What of the palace you get
The roofs, all of them, from above — the one place in Beijing where you look straight down the palace's golden roofs to the south; the light on them comes from the west, so late afternoon is the classic time. The summit platform is small and everyone wants the same frame · 2026-09-11
Best for
The no-ticket day: the whole palace at once for ¥2; anyone leaving the palace by the north gate
Come for one view, not a park day: the whole point is the summit look down onto the Forbidden City, and on a no-ticket day it is the closest thing to having been inside. Do not go mid-afternoon after the palace closes — that is exactly when everyone else arrives and the Wanchun Pavilion platform is small; go at opening (6:30) or in the last hour of daylight, and go up at least an hour before the ticket cutoff because the pavilions' own closing time is not posted. The trap is the booking gap: no lottery and no release time, but whether a walk-up day ticket is sold at the gate is not written anywhere we have read, and how the online platform handles passports is unpublished — so treat the ¥2 as near-certain and the mechanics as unconfirmed. Against the Ancestral Temple: this is the outside from above, that is the inside at full scale; do both. Beihai's East Gate is across the street from the West Gate if you want the afternoon filled.

How to book & release time
Tickets at the gate, no advance booking stated on the tourism-bureau page — one of the few Tiananmen-area sites you can simply walk up to; buy ¥2 at the south gate, then the hall ticket at the inner gate. How long
Not checked — we give no duration; think of it as the palace warm-up, with the west gate 5 minutes from the Meridian Gate approach · 2026-09-11
Distance from the palace
150 m from Tiananmen, east of the gate; the west gate opens onto the approach between Tiananmen and the Meridian Gate, so you can leave the temple and be at the palace entrance in 5 minutes. South gate on Chang'an Avenue, Line 1 Tiananmen East Exit A · 2026-09-11
What of the palace you get
A palace hall at palace scale, from inside: the Front Hall (享殿) — 68 golden nanmu columns on a platform 2 m higher than the Hall of Supreme Harmony, built 1420 with the palace, the tourism-bureau page's own comparison — plus the Rear Hall where the emperors' tablets were kept. Empty on any ordinary day · 2026-09-11
Best for
People who want to stand inside a 1420 imperial hall without a lottery; the palace warm-up on a ticketed day
The inside you can still have: China's largest surviving imperial ancestral complex, built to the same 1420 plan as the palace, with a Front Hall taller than the palace's own throne hall, and almost no foreign visitors, because the signs say 'Working People's Cultural Palace' and English maps sometimes omit it. Do not go on a Monday (the halls shut) and do not buy the ¥2 grounds ticket alone (that gets you trees and the outside of the walls); pay the ¥15 for the halls or do not bother. It is run as a union cultural centre, not a museum: exhibitions come and go and parts of the grounds close for events without notice. Against Jingshan: this is the hall, that is the roofs — on a no-ticket day they are the pair. Against the National Museum: no lottery, no phone, no passport asked.

The history behind the palace labels, on a no-ticket or rainy day; anyone who wins the 17:00 release
The objects, not the palace — and its own lottery: released at 17:00 seven days out, weekend sessions gone in minutes, one booking per account per week, so a failed attempt costs you the week and nothing is sold or reserved at the door. Do not 'practise' with a throwaway date, and do not come on a Tuesday if you can help it; the Monday closure pushes everyone into it. Try the English booking site first; if it will not take your passport, the Chinese mini-program needs a real-name WeChat account. Pick the 13:30 session for the shortest queue and go upstairs for the quiet galleries once 'Ancient China' is done. Our fallback if you cannot get a slot is the Capital Museum, 4 km west, with ID registration at the door in 2026. Against Jingshan and the Ancestral Temple: this is a second booking to win, not a walk-up, so plan it as a bet, not a rescue. For people who want the objects more than the building and can win a second 17:00 release; a rainy-day plan booked a week ahead.
