Beijing's own history museum — the one place that tells the story of the city rather than of China, from the Zhoukoudian caves through the Yuan capital to the 1950s, with the best Beijing-opera and folk-custom galleries in town. It sits 4 km west of Tiananmen on Chang'an Avenue (Line 1 Muxidi), which is why nobody goes. In 2026 it is also the easiest big museum in the city to get into: no advance lottery, just show ID at the north gate and register.

Beat the crowds
The Maya-Andes special exhibition (through autumn 2026) fills the ground floor on weekends; the Beijing history and opera galleries upstairs are quiet at any hour. After 17:00 only floors 1 and B1 open, so evening visits are for the special show, not the permanent galleries.
Language
Permanent galleries are labelled in English; self-service audio guides available, human guiding 'adjusted to circumstances' (official guide). The 2026 guide is Chinese only.
