Chairman Mao Memorial Hall
The 1977 mausoleum at the south end of the square where Mao Zedong lies in a crystal coffin. Free, mornings only (Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-12:00), real-name booked one to six days ahead on the hall's own WeChat channels, and the strictest bag rule in Beijing: no bags, cameras, bottles or liquids at all, with a paid storage office on the east side of the square. The line moves fast — you are inside for a couple of minutes, walking, in silence.
Real-name booking 1-6 days ahead via the '毛主席纪念堂' WeChat service account, its booking mini-program, or the hall's page on people.com.cn (official notice); no booking window on siteVerified · 2026-09Source ↗
Real-name entry; official passport acceptance is unconfirmed. Show the ID used for booking at the entry check (official: 主动出示有效身份证件); the notice does not list passports — local listings say passports are accepted for booking
Queues are longest on Tuesday mornings (after the Monday closure), on 26 December (Mao's birthday), 9 September and public holidays; a plain weekday at 10:30 is usually 20-30 minutes.
Chinese only on the booking channels and the notice; signage inside is bilingual and there is nothing to read once you are moving.
