The Temple of Heaven's northern twin: the square altar built in 1530 where Ming and Qing emperors sacrificed to the Earth every summer solstice — square where Tiantan is round, sunk where Tiantan is raised, and almost empty on any day that is not Spring Festival. 37 hectares of cypress and ginkgo just north of the Lama Temple, ¥2 to enter and ¥5 more for the Huangqi Hall, open from 6:00 until 21:30 in summer. Beijing readers know it from Shi Tiesheng's essay 'I and the Temple of Earth'; foreign visitors mostly do not know it exists.

How to book

Ticket windows at the gates; day tickets also sell online — the park's own WeChat official account '地坛公园' / '东城区属公园' and, since the 2026 system upgrade, Alipay's '地坛公园' self-service ticketing (park office notice, Aug 2026, via a local listing) — not stated as compulsory (district-run park, not on the municipal '畅游公园' list)Secondhand source

Beat the crowds

Quiet except for the Spring Festival temple fair (the first week of the lunar year, the city's biggest) and the three book fairs in spring, autumn and winter listed by the tourism bureau. Early mornings belong to tai chi and choir groups; from late October to mid-November the ginkgo avenue inside the west gate draws photographers.

Language

Bilingual signs on the altar and the main halls; nothing else.
