A 232-metre pedestrian lane that runs diagonally from the Drum Tower down to Silver Ingot Bridge — the shortest, prettiest link between the towers and the lakes, lined with Ming-Qing-style shopfronts that once sold pipes and tobacco and now sell snacks, souvenirs and photos in period costume. Free, open all hours, and one of the most crowded 200 metres in the city after dark. Walk it once, early.

Beat the crowds
Before 10:00 it is a quiet lane with the shutters half up; from mid-afternoon to late evening it is a single slow queue of people between the Drum Tower and the bridge. Do it as your walk to the lakes in the morning, or after the towers close at 17:30.

Shop signs partly bilingual; prices posted in Chinese numerals for snacks — point and pay
