The private temple of Wang Zhen, the eunuch who ran the Ming court until the 1449 Tumu disaster — built 1443-44 and left alone since, which makes its four courtyards the most complete Ming timber complex in Beijing: black glazed roofs, 9,000 miniature Buddha niches lining the Rulai Hall, the city's oldest revolving sutra cabinet, and Ming ceilings so fine that two of them were sold to American museums in the 1930s. The reason to come is the sound: the temple's own Buddhist orchestra has played the same court repertoire since 1446, and gives short free performances in the second courtyard most days. ¥20, closed Mondays, ten minutes from Chaoyangmen.
EntranceLine 2 / Line 6 Chaoyangmen, Exit G, then south on Chaoyangmen South St and west into Lumicang Hutong, about 700 m; or Line 1/2 Jianguomen, north

How to book
Online or on the day: the museum's notice says tickets sell 'both online and offline' — online up to 5 opening days ahead on the '智化寺' WeChat ticketing system, then scan the order QR code at the entrance; the ticket office sells on the day (parent museum's site, 2026). Exception: in the spring flower-season crowd-control period (dates announced by the museum each spring) it is WeChat-only — 3 opening days ahead, released 21:00, 'the ticket office no longer sells' (platform reposts of the museum notices). Wednesdays: first 200 free, booked online at ¥0, one per document. Groups by phone 010-65253670Verified · 2026-09Source ↗
ID details
ID rules: see details. Individual tickets: 'visitors enter with a ticket' — no ID rule for paid tickets; the Wednesday free quota is 'one per document', and concessions (under-18 and 60+ Chinese citizens incl. permanent-resident foreigners, students, disabled, servicemen) show the document at the ticket office (museum notice on the parent museum's site)
Beat the crowds
Empty most of the time — the tourism bureau's own capacity note is 50 people. The music performances draw a small crowd of thirty; arrive ten minutes early for a seat on the steps.
Language
Bilingual panels on the halls and the music; performances are instrumental, no language needed. Ticket desk Chinese-speaking.
