Downtown Chengdu in Half a Day: Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Tianfu Square and the City Museum

Decision5 compared
DOWNTOWN CHENGDU IN HALF A DAY: CHUNXI ROAD, TAIKOO LI, TIANFU SQUARE AND THE CITY MUSEUM · CHENGDU

Shape a downtown half-day around Tianfu Square, the city museum, Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li. The museum is the only stop that can fail on booking or closing day; everything else works as a flexible walk around it.

The short answer

Ifyou are planning the half-day at allthen

Only one thing here needs booking and only one thing closes: the Chengdu Museum. Real-name, up to 14 days ahead, only on the museum's WeChat official account or its website - it states it has not authorised any third party, individuals included, and its own notice says the police have dealt with a dozen-plus scalpers, so buy neither a ticket nor an 'English guide' at the door. Closed Mondays, except public-holiday Mondays. Everything else on this page - the square, Donghuamen, Chunxi Road, Taikoo Li, Daci Temple - is free, unbookable and open every day.

Ifyou have no Chinese phone numberthen

Use the museum's English booking interface with an email address: its notice of 1 August 2025 says overseas visitors can book through the English interface of the ticket booking system using an email address. Which document types the form accepts is not published, so treat a passport as likely but unconfirmed - and bring the one you booked with. Try this before asking a hotel to book for you; it is the one big Chengdu museum that gets you round WeChat and the Chinese phone number. If you cannot get a slot, do not come to the door: there is no walk-up queue under 60.

Ifyou are trying to work out what 'Chunxi Road' actually isthen

Three things share one block and people mix them up. Chunxi Road is the older, cheaper pedestrian cross - department stores, phone shops, and the old-brand snack houses that are the reason to walk it. Taikoo Li is the open-air luxury quarter one block east, laid out as lanes around Daci Temple; it was called 'Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu' until August 2023 and maps still print the old name. IFS is the other owner's mall across Hongxing Road, and the climbing panda is on IFS, not on Taikoo Li. All three sit on Chunxi Road station, Lines 2 and 3.

Ifyou want the picture of the climbing pandathen

Two shots in two places. From the street at the Hongxing Road / Dacisi Road corner you get the back and hindquarters going over the parapet - that is the free one, and it queues on weekend evenings. For the face you have to go inside IFS and up to the seventh floor, the mall's sculpture garden and art gallery, where the 15-metre panda is at eye level; the terrace keeps mall hours, about 10:00-22:00 by platform listings, and closes with the shops, so it will not be open before they are.

Ifyou want Sichuan opera and it is a Saturdaythen

Walk two blocks north from Chunxi Road's north end to the Jinjiang Theatre: the Yuelai Teahouse beside it runs classic excerpts at 14:00 on Saturdays, 40 / 60 / 80 yuan including a lidded cup of tea, 30% off for teahouse members. One show a week, in dialect, no subtitles, in a small room - buy at the box office at 54 Huaxing Zheng Street earlier in the week (Wednesday to Saturday 9:30-17:00) rather than on the day, or on the 成都市川剧研究院 mini-program. If you want face-changing on demand instead, the same building sells the 70-minute produced show.

Chengdu IFS and the climbing panda:The 15-metre panda hauling itself over the parapet of the IFS mall on Hongxing Road is the most photographed object in central Chengdu - 'I Am Here' by Lawrence Argent, unveiled when Chengdu IFS opened on 14 January 2014. Two shots in two places: from the street at the Hongxing Road / Dacisi Road corner you get its back and hindquarters climbing the wall; for the face you go inside and up to the seventh floor, the mall's sculpture garden and art gallery, where it is at eye level. The terrace keeps mall hours - about 10:00-22:00 by platform listings, the operator's own site unreadable - and closes with the shops. The panda is free; everything else in there is a luxury mall. five minutes folded into Taikoo Li - it is across Hongxing Road, not part of it.

Daci Temple:Draft entry - our wording is not final. A working Buddhist temple with 1,600 years of history, now entirely surrounded by the Taikoo Li lanes, so incense and luxury flagships share one block; temple tradition puts Xuanzang's ordination here in 622. Free, no booking, fifteen minutes unless you sit for tea - and the courtyard teahouse is the cheapest seat in the whole shopping district, a lidded cup reported at about 30 yuan. The catch is that the temple publishes nothing at all: the hours (8:00-17:00 on one platform, 17:30 on others) and the free entry are platform figures whose pages we could not read, so be inside by 16:00 and expect a ceremony to close a hall without notice. Shoulders covered, no flash in the halls. the quietest fifteen minutes in the block - weekday mornings before the mall opens.

Tangba Street and Chongdeli:Five minutes east of Taikoo Li's back and a different city: 539 metres of red brick, granite kerbs and cast-iron railings running from the restored Chongdeli courtyards to Tianxianqiao South Road, once the lane where the Daci Temple monks kept their weapons - hence the name - and now the densest run of independent cafés, small kitchens and studios in the city, on Time Out's 2018 list of the world's 50 coolest neighbourhoods. No gate, no hours, no ticket. It is also the district's good-value lunch: small Sichuan kitchens at local prices, one street from Taikoo Li's hotel-priced restaurants. Cafés open late by Chengdu standards (10:00-11:00), and it is a QR-pay street - have Alipay set up. lunch or a coffee after Taikoo Li - weekday mornings for the old half, the tailors and the stone-ground tofu shop.

Jinjiang Theatre and Yuelai Teahouse:Two blocks north of Chunxi Road's north end, and the cheap, local end of the face-changing question: the home theatre of the Chengdu Sichuan Opera Research Institute, reopened on 10 July 2026 after an eight-month refit, with the Yuelai Teahouse beside it back to its Saturday 14:00 programme of classic excerpts - 40 / 60 / 80 yuan including a lidded cup of tea, 30% off for teahouse members. That is one performance a week, in dialect, with no subtitles. Buy at the box office at 54 Huaxing Zheng Street, Wednesday to Saturday 9:30-17:00, or on the 成都市川剧研究院 WeChat mini-program; enquiries 028-86529521. If you want face-changing on demand instead, the same building sells the 70-minute 'Legend of Face-Changing' show. a Saturday afternoon, bought earlier in the week - the room is small.
