The city zoo, founded in 1953 and on this site since 1976, is the plan B when the Panda Base is sold out: it has a giant panda house, a ¥20 ticket, a ticket window for people who cannot book online, and a metro station named after it (Line 3, Exit A). It is also an honest old-fashioned zoo — 220-odd species over a flat, tree-shaded park next to Zhaojue Temple — so go for a cheap, unhurried panda sighting, not for the Panda Base experience.

Beat the crowds
The zoo's own advice: 9:00-12:00 or after 16:00 are the best hours; weekends and school holidays bring families. The panda house is at the far end of the recommended loop — go there first if pandas are the point.
