Where to See Chongqing's Night Skyline

Decision5 compared
WHERE TO SEE CHONGQING'S NIGHT SKYLINE · CHONGQING

Choose the night view you actually want: Hongyadong, a bridge, the cableway, Nanshan or a river cruise. Camera angle, queues and cost differ sharply, and the most expensive option is not automatically the best view.

The short answer

Ifyou want the Hongyadong photothen

Do not go inside. Stand in the middle of the Qiansimen Bridge footpath for the facade face-on, or cross to the Grand Theatre riverbank for the wide shot with the bridge. Arrive twenty minutes before the lights — 19:30 on the current notice — for the blue hour.

Ifyou want to ride the cablewaythen

Tickets are same-day only: the 长江索道 WeChat official account opens at 07:45 and gives a queue number; a return is 50 yuan but needs a fresh number for the way back. If the account will not take your passport, go to the north-station ticket hall with it. The south station usually has the shorter queue.

Ifyou want to fit several into one eveningthen

Cableway first — it stops at 22:00 in summer and 21:00 in winter — then walk to Hongyadong and the Qiansimen Bridge, where the lights stay on until 23:00. Nanshan is a separate trip: a taxi up from Shangxinjie takes 15-25 minutes, so book a car for the way down before you leave the deck.

Ifyou are booking the night cruisethen

There is no official fare: 138-168 yuan is the platforms' figure, so check the face value at the pier. Buy from an operator's WeChat official account, a pier machine or an authorised OTA, never a street seller; book with the passport you will carry, and check which of the three piers your ticket names.

Ifyou are here between November and Februarythen

Check for fog before every one of these: a foggy evening turns the skyline into a wall of grey. If you cannot see the Raffles City towers from the riverside, skip Nanshan, where there is no bad-weather refund, and keep a spare evening for the cruise.

What you see
Eleven storeys of stilt-house-style shops stacked on the cliff from Cangbai Road down to the Jialing, relit in 2018. From inside you see the crowd; the facade is seen best from the bridge or the far bank · 2026-09-16
Lights / opening hours
Lights 19:30-23:00 on the notice from 3 September 2026 — moved by season, so check the current notice; the district list prints 11:00-23:00 for the shops · 2026-09-03
Price
Free — a 4A scenic spot listed as non-charging. The lift between floors is free too; anyone selling a '10 yuan fast lane' is not staff · 2026-01-06
Booking & ID
No booking on ordinary days (the city dropped it on 25 July 2024) and no ID check; on holidays entry is capped by capacity, not booked — 16,014 at any one time · 2026-02-15
Getting there
Floor 11 on Cangbai Road: Line 1 or 6 to Xiaoshizi, or Line 2 to Linjiangmen, then 5-10 minutes on foot. Do not take a taxi to the riverside floor-1 gate — the road is often closed to cars at night · 2025-09-26
Queues & crowds
The most crowded spot once the lights come on; the queue for the lift is the visit. On 1-8 October and at Spring Festival the surrounding roads close to cars from 16:00, and entry was suspended on the evening of 17 February 2026 · 2026-02-19
Don't get this wrong
The old 'reservation' in some guides was the 2020-23 holiday ticket; it has gone. And the Daijiaxiang cliff walk 270 m west is a separate free lane, not part of the site · 2026-09-16
The thing everyone photographs, and the worst place to photograph it from. It is free and needs no booking, and walking down through the floors from Cangbai Road to the river is worth doing once — but once the lights come on it is the most crowded spot in Chongqing, and on holidays the police close the roads from 16:00 and the site caps entry by headcount. Look at it from the Qiansimen Bridge or the Grand Theatre bank, and if you want the terraces themselves, come on a weekday after 21:30.

Queues & crowds
Shoulder to shoulder at lighting-up on holidays; on 1-8 October and at Spring Festival the bridge closes to cars 16:00-24:00 and becomes a walkway. On ordinary days the path is narrow with traffic beside it — hold on to your camera · 2025-09-24
Don't get this wrong
Dongshuimen Bridge, 1.5 km south-east on the Yangtze side, is its twin but faces Huguang Guild Hall and the cableway, not Hongyadong · 2026-09-21
The best free seat for Hongyadong, and everyone knows it. From the middle of the footpath the whole lit facade is in front of you across the river; it costs nothing and never closes. Come twenty minutes before the lights for the blue hour, and again after 21:30 when the tour groups have gone. On holidays the bridge is shut to cars and packed with people; on ordinary nights the path is narrow with traffic beside it.

Yangtze River Cableway

长江索道Open the place →
What you see
A few minutes in a 65-person car 1,166 m across the Yangtze, from Xinhua Road on the peninsula to Shangxin Street in Nan'an — the river, the bridges and the stacked city below · 2026-09-16
Lights / opening hours
March-November 08:00-22:00, December-February 08:00-21:00; public holidays from 07:30. One weekday a month closed for maintenance, posted about five days ahead · 2026-07-24
Price
30 yuan one way, 50 return — the city's ceiling from 1 January 2025; anything higher is not a cableway ticket · 2025-03-24
Booking & ID
Same-day tickets on the 长江索道 WeChat official account from 07:45 (07:15 on holidays) with a queue number, or the north-station ticket hall. Real-name since 2018; whether a passport number works online is not published — take the passport to the ticket hall · 2018-11-01
Getting there
North station: Line 1 or 6 Xiaoshizi exit 5, about 30 m. South station: Line 6 Shangxinjie exit 2 · 2026-09-16
Queues & crowds
The north station can queue for an hour on holidays; on our visit the south (Shangxinjie) queue was shorter, and riding south-to-north puts the peninsula skyline in front of you. A return ticket needs a fresh queue number for the way back · 2024-09-13
Don't get this wrong
The Jialing River cableway was demolished in 2011; this is the only one. The 20 / 30 yuan prices still circulating online are from 2023 · 2025-03-24
A few minutes over the river for the price of a lunch, and the ticket every first-time visitor buys. The catch is how it is sold: same-day only, through a Chinese WeChat official account that opens at 07:45 and hands out queue numbers, with no word on whether a passport number is accepted online — so take the passport to the north-station hall, or go to the south station, where the queue is usually shorter. It stops at 22:00 in summer and 21:00 in winter, so ride it before you walk over to Hongyadong.

Booking & ID

Queues & crowds
The terrace fills at weekends. Getting down is the real problem: few taxis at the gate after 21:00, often quoting a fixed price — order a ride-hail before you leave the deck, and do not walk down the road at night · 2026-09-21
Don't get this wrong
Not the Dajinying deck in the botanical garden about 2.3 km away, a different 12 yuan ticket. And from November to February check the fog first — there is no bad-weather refund · 2026-09-21
The postcard view, and the only one here that takes real effort. From the deck halfway up Nanshan the whole peninsula lies across the Yangtze, and at 30 yuan (15 in winter) it is cheap — but there is no metro, the taxi up from Shangxinjie takes 15-25 minutes, and after 21:00 getting a car down is the hard part. Arrive on a weekday between 18:30 and 19:30, before dark, and wait for the lights. In the fog season, if you cannot see the Raffles City towers from the riverside, do not go up.

Queues & crowds
The first two sailings after the lights come on sell first. Buy same-day; evening tickets can be refunded before 18:00 for a 20% fee on ordinary days, never on public holidays · 2018-06-13
Don't get this wrong
Three companies, three piers, tickets not interchangeable. And the Three Gorges cruise ships also board at Chaotianmen — they are multi-day boats to Yichang · 2018-06-13
The best 45 minutes of skyline in the city, and the worst organised. The boats pass everything on this page — Hongyadong, the Grand Theatre, the confluence, the cableway — but three companies run them from three piers whose tickets do not mix, and there is no official fare: the 138-168 yuan you will see is the platforms' figure, so check the face value at the pier. Grand Theatre and the Jiangbeizui riverbank:The free wide shot: across the Jialing from Hongyadong, the theatre forecourt and the riverbank below put Hongyadong, the Qiansimen Bridge and the peninsula skyline in one frame. Line 6 to Grand Theatre, or walk over the bridge from Hongyadong — Grand Theatre to bridge to Hongyadong is about 25 minutes on foot. In the flood season (roughly June-September) the lowest steps are under water. Pair it with the bridge for the close-up.
