Where to See the Pearl River at Night

Decision5 compared
WHERE TO SEE THE PEARL RIVER AT NIGHT · GUANGZHOU

Choose how to see the Pearl River at night: from above, from a boat, from a bridge or on foot. Weather, booking and the angle change the experience, so decide whether you want a skyline panorama, water-level lights or a free walk.

The short answer

IfYou just want the photo of the towerthen

Do not buy anything. Stand at the south end of Haixinsha or in the middle of Haixin Bridge — 400 m of open water, two bridges in frame, free and no booking since 28 January 2025. Get there 15-20 minutes before dark; the tower lights at dusk and local platforms put the lights out around 23:00, though the tower publishes no lighting timetable.

IfYou want to go up the towerthen

Buy the 18:00-20:00 window several days ahead on cantontower.com or an authorised OTA — the ticket hall sells only the window that is running, and that window is the one that goes first. Bring your passport: the official rules ask for a Chinese ID card and never mention passports, and a visitor without one registers at the kiosk in the ticket hall and buys with the printed receipt. Miss your two-hour window and the ticket is dead with no refund.

IfYou are booking the night cruisethen

There is no official fare: 'from ¥78' is a platform line and 2026 platform prices run about ¥100-190, so read the price on the ticket at the window. Boarding is real-name — 'bring a valid document' — but no operator page says whether that document can be a passport, so buy at the pier with the passport in your hand instead of pre-booking from abroad, arrive 30 minutes early, and check which of the ten-odd piers your ticket is for: the two piers under the tower belong to two companies and the tickets do not cross over.

IfYou have one evening and want to walk itthen

Start on the north bank: Line 5 Liede exit D, 200 m south down Xiancun Road to the Linjiang Avenue promenade for sunset, then west along the water to Haixinsha and the square for the lit tower. If you want to finish with a drink, cross the Liede Bridge footpath — about 20 minutes — and end at Party Pier on the tower's own bank, where the grounds are free and open all day and the bars fill after 19:00.

IfIt is hazy, raining, or Novemberthen

Hazy evening: do not go up the tower (the official rules say visibility is not a reason for a refund); take the free view from Haixinsha instead. Rain: the cruise operators say nothing about rain or typhoons and piers cancel at their own discretion in the April-September rainy season, so do not lock a night in advance. November: the light festival puts the square and Haixinsha on timed booking through the 广州国际灯光节 and 广州海心沙 accounts, registered with your ID details and the original shown at the gate; the same festival lights the silos at Party Pier and the towers along Linjiang Avenue, which is a reason to come rather than avoid it.

Huacheng Square & Haixinsha

花城广场 · 海心沙
What you see
The tower straight across 400 m of water from the south end of Haixinsha or the middle of Haixin Bridge; from the south end of the square (between the provincial museum and the library) the tower is framed between two bridges · draft entry, 2026-09-16
Lights / opening hours
Square is open ground at any hour; Haixinsha 07:00-23:00 on three platforms (no official hours page exists); Haixin Bridge 07:00-23:00, last entry onto the bridge 22:45 · bridge notice 2025-01-26, island hours platform figure
Price
Free — public square and park, no ticketing; the bridge is free too · draft entry, 2026-09-16
Booking & ID
None day to day: Haixin Bridge dropped its booking from 28 January 2025, holidays included, and the bag check stays. In the November light festival the square and the island switch to timed booking on the 广州国际灯光节 / 广州海心沙 accounts, registered with your ID details and the original shown at entry · 2025-01-26 / 2025-10-30
Getting there
The APM line runs under the square with three stations on it — Huacheng Square, Opera House, Haixinsha; Line 3/5 Zhujiang New Town for the north end. The square is about 1.5 km end to end, 30-40 minutes on foot · draft entry, 2026-09-16
Queues & crowds
The bridge runs a bag check and a queue, and the operator says it manages the flow by capacity when it has to. The island has gates and shuts for events — it closed the whole island for a show on 8-9 August 2026 and sent people to the bridge and Ersha Island instead · 2025-01-26 / draft entry
Don't get this wrong
The Haixinsha 'east pier' is the Red Boat theatre pier; the tower's own cruise leaves from Fortune Pier, with ticket desks at bridge 2 and by exit P13 on the square · draft entry, 2026-09-16
The default answer, and the free one. You are looking at the tower across open water with the two bridges in frame, and nothing here needs a ticket, a booking or a document. Two things can spoil it: the island shuts for concerts and for the November light festival (which puts the square on timed booking too), and the bridge has a bag-check queue. If the island gate is closed, the south end of the square and the middle of Haixin Bridge give the same view for the same money. Come 15-20 minutes before dark.

Don't get this wrong
Yuejiang West Road on the south bank, under the tower, is the other promenade; Linjiang Avenue is the north bank facing the tower · 2026-09-15
A pavement with a view, and that is all it is: no shade, no decent coffee, a road behind you. It earns its place because it is the one spot on this list with nothing between you and the tower — no gate, no bag check, no closing time. Come for the twenty minutes around sunset and the first hour of the lights, then move on to Haixinsha or walk the Liede Bridge footpath across to Party Pier in about 20 minutes. Do not build an evening around it.

Queues & crowds
The 18:00-20:00 window is the one that sells out first, so buy it days ahead. A ticket is locked to its two-hour window and 'visitors who miss the cut-off time for their own reasons cannot enter' — no refund for missing it · 2023-11-24
Don't get this wrong
Chigang Pagoda, the small Ming brick pagoda 500 m south-west, is a separate monument and not in the ticket; and 'Canton Tower · Zhongda Pier' cruises leave from the university side about 2.5 km away, not from the tower · 2026-09-16
A great view sold through a ticketing system built around Chinese ID cards. If you want to be up there, buy the 18:00-20:00 window several days ahead, bring your passport and expect to use the self-registration kiosk in the ticket hall, and accept that your ticket dies if you miss the window. Skip it on a hazy evening — the rules say visibility is not a reason for a refund — and take the free view from Haixinsha instead. Everyone else on this page is looking at the tower; this is the one entry where you are inside it.

Queues & crowds
Ten-odd piers and several companies spread the crowd, so the queue is rarely the problem — the weather is. The tower's operator says nothing about rain or typhoons; in the April-September rainy season sailings are cancelled at the pier's discretion, so do not lock a specific night from abroad · draft entry, 2026-09-15
Don't get this wrong
Two piers under the tower belong to two companies with tickets that do not cross over: the Ferry Co.'s 'Canton Tower pier' and the tower's own Fortune Pier. The Red Boat at Haixinsha East is a show on a boat, not the sightseeing cruise, and the ¥2 water bus is a commuter ferry with no loop and no commentary · draft entry, 2026-09-15
A product, not a landmark, and the only thing on this page with no official price at all — ten-odd piers, several companies, loud Chinese commentary and tickets that do not cross over. If you want it: pick the pier nearest you at dusk, buy at the window with your passport in hand, take the open deck, and treat any online fare as an estimate. The one on this page that is not a viewpoint but an evening. You are on the tower's own bank looking back at it with a beer, inside an industrial shell the district has bothered to label.
