LIZHIWAN CANAL AND LIWAN LAKE (LITCHI BAY, PANXI TEAHOUSE) · LIZHIWAN

The waterway that gave Liwan its name — 'litchi bay', the orchard creeks where Canton's merchants kept garden villas — buried as a sewer in the 1990s and dug open again in 2010 as a 1 km promenade of stone bridges, restored Xiguan houses and the Wenta pagoda. It runs from Liwan Lake Park (five lakes dug by volunteer labour in 1958) down to Enning Road and the opera museum. Panxi, the garden teahouse of 1947, sits on the lake; Renwei Temple and the Liwan Museum are a lane away.
