Shawan Ancient Town
An 800-year-old Cantonese clan town of the He family, still lived in: 113 registered heritage sites, a hundred-odd ancestral halls with Liugengtang at the top, oyster-shell walls, a Ming-to-Republic 'history wall', and the home of both Cantonese music (the 'three He masters') and ginger milk pudding. The lanes are free and open all day; seven small museums — Liugengtang, the He Binglin memorial, the Cantonese music memorial in Sanrenting and four others — sell one combined ticket of ¥40 (¥30 on the platforms), so a visit costs nothing unless you go inside. Bus from Line 3 Shiqiao station; no metro.
No reservation for the town. Combined museum ticket at the South Gate visitor centre (next to the Shawan Culture Centre), the West Gate service point or any museum door; also sold online (Meituan, Ctrip, Klook) and redeemed at the same points or any hall door (pick-up 9:30-16:30 per the online-ticket terms)Secondhand source
Passport required; see details for entry handling. None to walk the lanes. Concession tickets need the original ID; a 2022 notice mentioned 'real-name ticketing' for the museums but no current official wording — expect to show a passport when buying, and ask
Weekend afternoons and the National Day week bring coach groups to the South Gate lane and the ginger-milk stalls; mornings before 11:00 and weekday evenings after the day-trippers leave are when the residents' town shows. The Piaose floats parade on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month closes Liugengtang to visitors until 15:30 and fills every lane.
Signage in the ticketed halls is Chinese with some English captions judging by the operator's photos; the official site is Chinese only. Volunteer 'little guides' (children) give Chinese-language tours on announced days.
