The hill the city started from: 69 hectares of seven wooded ridges and three lakes inside the old north wall, free and open 6:00-22:00. On it are the things Guangzhou puts on its postcards — the 1960 Five Rams statue (the city's emblem, 11 m of granite), a 1,100 m stretch of the 1380 Ming wall with banyans growing through it, Zhenhai Tower on the wall (the museum, ¥10 separately), and the 1930 Sun Yat-sen Monument up a 498-step stair. It is hilly and it is big: the rams are a 15-20 minute climb from the nearest gate.

Beat the crowds
Before 9:00 the park belongs to morning exercisers and the paths to the rams are empty; the rams and Zhenhai Tower get tour groups 10:00-15:00. Lantern-festival season (around Chinese New Year) brings ticketed evening events.
