A rare red-brick survivor in the Bund lineup — the 1906 Butterfield & Swire office building, five minutes south of where most tourists turn back. Most tourists turn back at the end of the main Bund — this stays quiet year-round. Come in daylight for the brick facade and atrium mural, then continue to the Shiliupu docks.
How to visit
- How to spot it: one of the very few red-brick buildings anywhere on the Bund — plain red brick and arched doorways, a completely different character from the stone row to the north.
- The must-see is the atrium: a 25m-tall, 4m-wide mural under a glass dome, ringed by three floors of gallery balconies — painted for the 2022 reopening; fashion shows and brand events land here regularly.
- It sits on Zhongshan East 2nd Road, one junction south of the main Bund Nos. 1-33 — about five minutes' walk south of Bund No. 1, with the Shiliupu docks just beyond.
- The 2020 'structural danger' headlines are old news — the 940-day restoration finished on 30 October 2022; don't let stale articles put you off.
- No ticket or reservation needed, but private events or security can close parts off; the restaurants, wedding halls and art space inside keep their own hours.
