The working Taoist temple at the heart of the old town, dedicated to Shanghai's city gods. Small, incense-filled and genuinely active — a 30-minute visit that anchors the Yuyuan bazaar area, whose street name (城隍庙) locals use for the whole neighborhood.

Admission¥10 flat 'incense ticket' for everyone — no senior or other discounts; only children under 1.3 m enter free
How to book

On-site QR-code purchase at the gate only — there is no online channel at all. You need working Alipay or WeChat Pay to buy the ticket, so have mobile payment set up before you come. No reservation, open year-round.

Beat the crowds

Open daily: May–Sep 9:00–17:00, Oct–Apr 8:30–16:30; opens at 6:00 on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, which bring heavy worshipper traffic. Mornings before 10am are otherwise calm.

Good to know

  • Free incense sticks are usually included with the ticket — take them at the entrance, light them in the courtyard burner.
  • Most of what shows up when searching 'City God Temple food street' is the surrounding bazaar, not the temple itself.
  • The barrier here is payment, not booking: gate sales are QR-scan only, so a traveler whose Alipay/WeChat Pay card binding is broken cannot buy a ticket — test your mobile payment at a convenience store before relying on it here.
