The 1923 neoclassical dome once called 'the finest building between the Suez and the Bering Strait'. Walk into the octagonal entrance hall (it is a working SPDB bank branch, free during banking hours) and look up: eight mosaic murals of the bank's 1920s branch cities, hidden under paint for decades and uncovered in the 1997 restoration.

AdmissionFree — enter during banking hours; no need to be a customer
Beat the crowds

Weekday mornings are calmest. Almost no tourist queue — this is one of the few Bund interiors you can simply walk into.

Good to know

  • The eight mosaic cities: Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Bangkok and Calcutta — see if you can spot Shanghai's.
  • Photography inside is at the guards' discretion — no tripods or flash.
  • The bronze lions at the door are replicas; the originals live in the Shanghai History Museum.
