Shanghai's largest 'new-style' lilong — rows of red-brick terraced houses dating from 1932 between West Nanjing Road and Weihai Road, still lived in by a few thousand people. It is the unrestored counterpart to Zhangyuan two blocks away: same housing type, no boutiques, laundry on the lines. You are walking through people's front yards, and the lane gates are theirs to close.

No tourist crowds, only residents' rhythms — morning shopping, evening cooking. Do not block the lane mouth for photos at mealtimes.

Answers you'll need here
- Can I walk into Shanghai's lane-house neighbourhoods, and how do I not be a nuisance?Depends · Yes, where the gate is open. It is someone's front yard, not a sight: camera down, voice low, out before dark.
