Shanghai History Museum
The 1933-34 Shanghai Race Club — clock tower, members' staircases, the grandstand that once looked over the racecourse — is now the city's history museum. The building is the first exhibit: everything you see on People's Square, the park, the museums, the avenue, was the racecourse's turf until 1951. Free, no booking since May 2023, closed Mondays, with a fifth-floor rooftop garden over the square and a café in the West Building.
Walk in, no booking for individuals (since 17 May 2023 per the museum's notice; confirmed free and booking-free for the 2026 shows). Groups: the older guide says 20+ call 021-63232504 three days ahead — confirm by phone. Entry may be paused at peak capacityVerified · 2026-01Source ↗
No ID rule is published for standard entry. Walk in: no booking and no ID check stated — the tourism promotion site lists it as 'no reservation, free admission'
Not confirmed: the museum's guide lists handheld audio devices and a WeChat scan guide without naming languages; English labels and tours are unknown (official site unreachable from abroad in our checks)
