Shanghai Museum East
The flagship new home of one of China's best museums: bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and jades presented at world-class standard, and it's free. Not in Lujiazui proper — it sits by Century Park, a short Line 2 ride east — but it's the strongest indoor half-day in Pudong.
No reservation for general admission — walk in and swipe your passport at the B1 east entrance security. Reservations return only during peak periods (national holidays, summer break, blockbuster special exhibitions): released 14 days ahead at 12:00 noon, with an official English email-based booking channel for international visitors that needs no Chinese phone number. The interactive Exploration Palace and Digital Gallery always require separate advance reservation.
Hours are 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:00. Weekday afternoons are the calm window; weekend slots fill fast. The bronze and ceramic galleries are the must-sees if you only have two hours.
Good to know
- This replaced the old People's Square building as the main collection venue — search results mixing the two locations are a common trap.
- Pair with Century Park or the Science and Technology Museum for a full Pudong indoor day.
- Nearest metro is Line 2 Shanghai Science and Technology Museum station area / Century Park side — check the exit map, the walk runs 10+ minutes.
- Day to day there is no barrier: passport walk-in works. In peak-period reservation mode the official English channel supports passports — a rare foreigner-friendly setup among Shanghai museums.
