Bund No. 19 at the Nanjing Road corner — the 1908 Palace Hotel with its striped white-and-red brick Renaissance facade, one of the first buildings in Shanghai with passenger lifts. Today it is Swatch's artist-residency house: the ground floor is open in business hours, and it is NOT the Peace Hotel — that green pyramid next door is No. 20.

Beat the crowds

It sits on the busiest corner of Nanjing Road — mornings are calmest for the facade; the ground floor is rarely crowded.

How to visit

  • How to spot it: white walls with red-brick stripes, like a striped shirt — a totally different character from the granite-and-green-pyramid Peace Hotel next door at No. 20.
  • Upstairs are studios for Swatch's international artists-in-residence (three-to-six-month stays), open to the public only during exhibitions — free with QR reservation; the ground floor holds Swatch, Omega and Longines boutiques, free to walk into in shop hours.

Did you know

  • Opened in 1908 as the Palace Hotel, among Shanghai's most luxurious — and one of the first buildings in the city with passenger lifts.
  • The 1909 International Opium Commission met in this building — one of the starting points of global drug control.
